if u have yahoo im then thats what they need to get or any other online instant messanger. Just find out their screen name after they download it.

Nope. The internet is international, any should work as long as you've both got the same IM program on either end. I've found that the most popular IM application internationally is MSN Messenger. All you both need is a hotmail e-mail account.
