Australian Cattle Dog gets to 17-20inches and weighs 30-35pounds. Is A working, herding breed, the Australian Cattle Dog is not suited to life alone in the backyard. One of the most intelligent breeds, it can become easily bored, leading to serious behavior problems. These dogs need to be part of the action! They are loyal, protective and alert. An excellent guard dog. Brave and trustworthy. Very good in the obedience ring and in herding and agility. Firm training from the start and lot of daily attention will produce a fine and happy pet. It is absolutely loyal and obedient to its master, but it is something of a one-person dog. They are sometimes suspicious of people and dogs they don't know. It can be very dog aggressive, for its dominance level is high. Not good with children except for family members it has known since puppyhood. Some tend to nip at people's heels in an attempt to herd them. If you are buying a pet, avoid strictly working lines, as these dogs may be too active and intense for home life. Australian Cattle Dogs are very easy to train. Puppies are born white (inherited from the early Dalmatian crosses), but the adult color can be seen in the paw pads.

Australian Shepherd- 20-23 inches and 50-65 pounds. Australian Shepherds are easy going, perpetual puppies that love to play. Courageous, loyal and affectionate, they are excellent children's companions that are great with active children. A devoted friend and guardian, for they are naturally protective. Very lively, agile and attentive - they are eager to please, with a sixth sense about what the owner wants. Australian Shepherds are highly intelligent and easy to train. Though aggressive when at work with livestock, the Aussie is gentle with human friends. Australian Shepherds needs lots of exercise and a job to do, as the breed is very intelligent, active and easily bored. They can become nervous and destructive if left alone too much without exercise. They are naturally suspicious of strangers, so they should be well socialized as puppies. Working lines of Australian Shepherds may be too energetic to be suitable pets. Some like to nip people's heals in an attempt to herd them. They are quiet workers, unlike some breeds, which are bred to bark constantly at livestock. This breed is not usually dog aggressive.

An Australian Cattle Dog is either a Blue and White or Red and White shorted coated stocky dog that around the size of a Labrador, perhaps a bit smaller. They are used for moving stock. They're not the prettiest of breeds.

The Australian Shepherd is an absolutely stunning breed with a long coat that is usually white with different coloured markings going through the coat. It is usually used for herding sheep and does wonderfully in agility.

The Australian Cattle Dog is typically fairly cheap, a farmer would probably give you one. However from a registered breeder you could expect to pay perhaps up to $800 for one.

An Aussie Shepherd depending on blood lines could cost you anywhere up to $2,000.

Both can be 'pets' but both require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation otherwise they can turn into right little demons.

No, there are a few differences. The Cattle dog orignated in the 1800's in Australia, with ancestors from the Dingo in Australia. This breed is the result of six decades of cross breeding. They are also ancestor to the blue merle Smooth Highland Collie, the Dalmation, and possibly the Bull Terrier.
The job of this breed was to work on the docks to herd sheep and cattle onto boats in Britain by nipping at their heels.
The breed is wary by nature, and must be introduced to other animals and people as a puppy. (socialized early).
It is expected to live app. 12 years, and the weight range is 35-45 lbs, and height is app. 17-20 in. high. They resemble more of a Blue Heeler.

Australian Shepherd dogs were developed in the U.S. in the 1900's and have an obedient and willing nature. They were originally bred to be adopted to work in the climate of California on farms and whatever else was needed. The breed has a temperament more similar to a Lab or Golden Retriever, therefore is better around people and children of all ages. Also, this dog has a short tail.

The life expectancy is app. 12-13 years, weight is 35-70 lbs., and height 18-23 inches tall.
This dog resembles more a miniature collie. The dog usually has a bobbed tail.
They're going to be about the same price if purchased from a breeder. Probably 200-400 dollars.

Hope this helps !

The Australian Shepherd, also known as an Aussie, has longer fur, is very energetic, and loves to chase. They are good in agility and other high-action dog sports. They are pretty friendly, though I have never owned one. They should do well outside, since they have long, fluffy coats. I'm sure the price isn't too high, since they are not a rare breed. You can find one almost anywhere.

The Australian Cattle Dog, or Blue/Red Heeler, has shorter, coarser fur. They are known for their superb herding skills, and they love to work in places where they can roam and run around, such as a farm. They are very friendly dogs, and I think they can stay outside for long periods of time, as long as it isn't too hot or cold. They are very independent. They shouldn't be too expensive either, just focus on finding the right dog before the price.

If you're looking at adopting one of these dogs, I would have to say that you picked a very nice breed. :) Hope this helped!

They are two totally different breeds. The Austrailian Shepherd had a longer coat and a different physic than the Australian Cattle Dog. The Shepherd is also a little larger. You can look on www.akc.com to view pictures of each breed.

They are different breeds of dogs. Both are herding dogs. Australian Cattle Dogs have short hair, Australian Shepherds are long-haired. There are a lot of both in my area (rural California). Both are used extensively as working ranch dogs. Both need lots of exercise and are best with a job to do. Generally, I have seen more Australian Shepherds as pets.

They are two different breeds. The Australian Shepherds are also referred to as Aussies for short. The Australian Cattle Dogs or ACDs for short are more likely to be more aggressive and head strong than Aussies. Depending on where you live but I think Aussies are more popular than ACDs overall. Aussies can have a range of coat length. They are a medium coated breed, however some of them, particulary some show lines may have too much coat to be considered a medium coated breed. Are you looking to get one of these? Research any breed to be sure it is what you want.
