Hardly anyone calls them wedding rings. And you never hear about engagement bands as those are always called rings. Why not give them a consistent name?

Band implies a wider (thicker, not larger in diameter) ring. That's why a wedding band can also be called a wedding ring but an engagement ring cannot be called an engagement band. Ring is more generic, band is more specific(in thickness).

most wedding rings have no stones only the gold band... hence wedding bands. engagement rings usually have stones so they are not technically "bands"

yes.its called wedding bands.but before anything else make sure u gor her an engagement ring.
