Where are you moving from? The cost of living in Louisiana is generally lower than states in the northeast and west. Since the hurricane housing prices have skyrocketed from what they used to be, but the prices are starting to drop back to near-normal levels again. Lafayette is about 50 miles west of Baton Rouge on I-10, and ~130 miles from New Orleans. It is a small town, with a state college (University of Lafayette) and 2 malls, and is steadily growing. Hope you enjoy your stay.

If you're from Ohio, then the cost of living will be lower. How much lower will depend on whether you want to rent, or own a home. Gas has been about 1.98/gallon for the last week. Food and staple items will be slightly cheaper :~} Sales tax is around 8% or 9%. It doesn't get as cold here, and definitely not for as long, so you may save on heating in the winter. It does get very hot (upwards of 90-95 on a daily basis) here in the summer, so what you save on heating may go towards cooling in the summer (which by the way is from about late April- early May to November). :~}
