My boyfriend and I are moving into an apartment and we've been wanting to get a dog. It has to be 20 pounds or lighter.

We want an active dog that we can take to parks and play with etc. And it should be reasonably easy to train. =)

Any suggestions!?

Go to the local ASPCA or Humane Society, and discuss your requirements with them. They could make a good recommendation.

There are many answers to this question. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is beautiful and might be under 20 lbs. Some of the little terriers are under 20 but, terriers bark a lot so you might not like to have them in an apt. Little Beagles are cute but, need plenty of exercise. Many of the toy breeds are nice. What you need to do is get some books or go online and research dog breeds. You could make a big mistake if you don't.

There are several small breeds to consider. Since you will be in an apartment, you don't want certain types of small breeds, as they can be very hyper and need quite a bit of attention.
My suggestion would be a Bischon. They are very loving, as well as playful. They can run with the BIG dogs, and be perfectly happy as a LAP dog. They do need grooming because of there coats, but, I do believe they are non-shedding, and great for people with allergies. My husband, and I had a Bischon, Barney. He was so very lovable, and really got along with our other dogs, a Lab, Rottie, and Toy Poodle. Toy Poodles are really great small dogs too. They are very smart, and easily trained. As I said there are many small Breeds to choose from. Do some research, and I am sure you will find the perfect fit for your new little puppy. Good Luck!

A Miniature Dachshund. These little fellows are such characters! Those big brown eyes will touch your heart the second you lay your eyes on one. The average weight is 7 to 10 pounds any more then that and that dog is overweight. If you get a short hair there is hardly any grooming and little to no shedding. They are playful and love to snuggle. They are very loyal and devoted to their owners. They are very smart and easy to train. The only drawback I know is that they prefer to sleep in your bed with you rather then in a bed of their own away from you. I have a female and she is my child I love her to death! She has a lot of toys and she loves to play fetch! I use to live in a studio apartment and she fit in there perfect. I imagine you will have a bigger apartment then that so I think this would be an ideal breed for you.

i have yorkies and they are wonderfull ONLY drawback is they actually can be dificult to train they are very stubborn takes a lot of patience... also if you both work i wouldnt recommend getting a puppy because you want to be around it for a while regularly... a puppy is a BIG responsibility ... they will chew up your house (even the little ones), while you are gone, they will whine, cry, cause a racket because they are lonely, you will come home to find "presents" on the floor you didnt want.... So unless you are willing to take the time to train a puppy i would look to a shelter BUT find out the reason why the dog is there... sometimes its just because the owner had to move, got sick, died ,whatever and no one else could take the dog....

Easy. Jack Russell Terrier. I have one and he is so fun. Jack Russell Terriers are very active and loyal and easy to train. You need to take them to obedience training. You are gonna have to give it a lot of exercise because you live in an apartment and he is going to be biting alot for the first two weeks but itll stop with good dicipline. I think jack russell terriers are the best dogs in the world!

Cockapoos (cocker spaniel and poodle mix) are brilliant and adorable. Check out the local shelters. I'd get another cockapoo in a heartbeat! I've got a Shih Tzu now and they can be too independent for the kind of dog you seem to be looking for. A small cockapoo should be a good choice.

I enjoy the personality of the mini doxie. Very brave, inquisitive, loyal, and humorous. They are very energetic and need daily exercise though. Also unlike other little rat size foo foo dogs, you can train them when they are young to not bark at every noise or freak out when they get startled. Plus the best part of having a doxie, you can ask people if they have seen your weiner.

You should check out the Shiba Inu. They look like little wolf dogs to me and range from 17-23 pounds.

Id go for either a Papillon, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, or a Miniature Dachshund. All are easy to train. Remember, don't go to a pet shop, and your best bet is to contact the breed 'parent' club.

check Maltese they are a total hoot and get no larger than 9lbs if they are on the right diet. Just the funniest dogs and they can be stubborn so train it as a puppy dont' let it get away with anything but its a really fun dog to very bouncy :-) but they do sleep well at night and let them have a short hair cut the long cut is for akc shows. We got ours from a rescue organization.. check out petfinder.com for dogs in your area.
