Recommend me video compressors?

I need to download (free) a software/application that will compress videos to mpeg. Any good ones?

Does it have to be mpeg? Because if avi is acceptable, then Virtualdub ( http://www.virtualdub.org ) is a great freeware tool. It accepts all modern codecs (Xvid, DivX, various MS codecs, MPEG-4 stuff, etc) and is very light-weight. It even has some basic editing abilities.
