Paul was a highly educated Jew, born a Roman citizen - rather than purchased citizenship, and top of his clas in seminary.
Suddenly he was preaching a theology which turned judaism upside down, to pagans who previously could not even enter the temple, about a man who had been condemned by the jewish leadership and crucified by the romans. He relied on others for his living expenses most of the time. He was beaten and jailed. As often as not, the believers in the churches were from the lower elements of society.
None of this bothered Paul because he personally held and offered what is the only door of salvation: Jesus

Paul meant it in the reference to the Cross through the Cross and the Cross alone man is Reconciled. What translation is that the KJV reads like this The apostle Paul said "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, because it is the power of God unto Salvation to every one who believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Jesus died as a criminal, causing some people to be ashamed of him. Paul says that the gospel--the "good news"--of Jesus is nothing to be ashamed of. The gospel teaches that Jesus is the Son of God, and that he came "not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him." That is the power of God for salvation.

Paul was a crazy man acting out of madness in order to gain power and acceptance by the Romans. From out of the mouth of madness, the world's greatest lies have been told, and we believe them.
He was trying to sell his lies about Jesus because only false prophets call on the power of God to gain their flock.
