Not everyone can afford to stay at home. If you don't have friends or family nearby, you still gotta buy some essentials at the store. Many jobs only give people a very limited number of sick days, and people who have their own business often don't make anything when they can't work. Many bosses give you trouble when you stay home unless you're really stay-in-bed, can't-move sick. Not everyone has friends or family to call to babysit their child so it can stay home.
I'm sure many of these people would love to stay home if you'd guarantee they didn't get fired, if you'd go shopping for them, if you paid them the difference in the money they'd lose, and they'd gladly let their sick child stay in bed if you'd come babysit for them! Sorry but that's just how life is nowadays, it's not just a case of convenience or carelessness but plain necessity for many.

Yes, it's rude but often people have no choice, unfortunately. You can make your feelings known, though, and still be polite about it. For example, when you have to wait on someone who clearly is ill or who has kids in tow who are sick you can say: "Oh, I can see you're not feeling well; I'm sorry. You'll excuse me if I don't shake your hand, and if I back up a little bit because I don't want to miss any work myself from illness, or bring anything home to my little one." Say all this with a smile. They might get it and think about it next time before they come in sick, or at the very least, not come to you for help. Good luck, and stay well!

Yes it's rude, but in MY office, managers will discipline you and put letters on your personnel file if you call in sick. It doesn't matter if you have a note signed by a dozen doctors attesting to the fact that you were ill. The managers do NOT care. Employees are expected to be present no matter.
So, people come to work sick and infect everyone else just so they don't get harassed by the bosses.
I had surgery on my elbow that required me to be off work for 3 months. My employer sent me a note a week prior to the operation informing that "their medical experts" stated that the most time off work I should miss is 6 HOURS. I wasn't even fawking awake 6 hours after surgery.

I agree. It's a lack of consideration for the well being of others. It's the same reason why they send their kids to school sick. They need to get things done and they really don't care about how the child is suffering or how he's passing his germs on to all the other children in the class. It's very, very rude.

Some people don't have a choice but to go out sick. Sick people still need to make a living and they may not have the luxury of having a sick day at work. When it comes down to it, people will chose to go to work to so they can provide for their family rather then stay at home. Personally, as a grad student with a full time job; i don't have the luxury of missing school if I'm sick, missing work or losing my only free day off to sit around the house sit. Usually, if I'm able to get out of bed and get dressed; I'm not that sick.

Yes, I do agree and I think it should be against office policy to bring a sick child in. Awful! Matter of fact, I don't think children should be allowed in the workplace at all. Too distracting. Unprofessional. And sick adults should stay home.

I totally agree with you! I have a three year old son myself that has asthma and viruses usually triger his asthma. I have a boss that comes into work sick all the time, practically on her death bed. I really wish she would stay home. People don't realize that companies lose so much money when employees come to work sick.

Because they are afraid of losing their jobs. I agree it is rude. I have also worked in places that "say" they don't want you to come in sick but, when you try to call in sick it is ridiculous. You get guilted and threatened, it's easier to just go to work and puke in the trash can.
