This is a religious question, america was more religious in the 50's. Anyway, I think the quality of life was better in the 50's for the average man. All inequality asside, I think the economy was better (we have very few manufacturing facilities anymore). I heard on the news that personal savings is at its lowest point since the great depression. There was better family life then, now you pretty much need two incomes to get by. I think personal freedom was greater, now we have laws for everything. Taxes were lower, the value of the dollar was greater. Other than some social injustices and technological advances, I would say they had a better quality of life for the most part.

I was born in 1954. Life was better in the 1960's when I went to school. Racial tension still exists today thanks to some millionaire black leaders who make a profit from racial tension. Women won their right for equality, even though the children had to suffer since that left them home alone. Fathers today say fine, women can work and take care of the children while they do their own thing. It just keeps getting worse. Thank God I grew up in the '50's and '60's with both my parents.

There were good things about the 50's that we have lost. There are some things better today. As a woman I am glad to be in this era. I was a child in the 50's and that was good and schools were saver and people didn't even have to lock the doors of the homes. But I would not have wanted to be a grown woman then. Even in the late 60's when I applied for my first job, they could discriminate because I was a woman and they asked personal questions that an employer cannot ask anymore. It was assumed that you would marry and have babies so they did not take a woman seriously and if she did get the job she was not paid the same wage. Most things are better now, but some are worse. We were a more sexually moral nation in the 50's. On the other hand we were also very judgmental. A young woman would not even THINK of having sex before marriage. But those poor souls that were raped or 'taken advantage of' had to go off somewhere secretly and have their babies. It was a disgrace to their family. That has changed.
We are a more violent country now, and that is not good.

Sure, it was a better quality of life for a white man. Not for anyone else.
If you were a woman, you had far fewer freedoms and you probably got knocked about from time to time since the law didn't take spousal abuse seriously. If you were a child, it was perfectly acceptable to be beaten with a leather belt for minor infractions. If you were a visible minority you could end up hung from a tree or with a burning cross on your front lawn. It was a horrible violent time. They just didn't bother reporting most of the horrors that went on.

I don't think you really can say one time is better than another. At age 67, I have lived thru a lot of times. I don't worry about the world today because I know that it always gets better. There is something in the nature of man to always want to move in the direction of positive. Someone or something always comes along and jolts us out of compacency. It is fomenting right now. The entire world is getting ready for a big change for the better.

Having lived in the 50's I think today's life is much better. Just because you heard it on the news doesn't make it true. The only reason you need two jobs is because you don't want to invest in education to get a really good job. Personal freedom has not changed. Having been there, today is the best.

Well, I certainly wouldn't say the homophobic, racist, misogynistic society of the 50s was more moral than current society.
Having said that, in the 50s the US was standing on the largest deposit of fossil fuel in the world. We no longer are -- that's a huge key. Another thing to consider is that the minimum wage then was the equivalent to about $12/hr.

Hey! I was there! I know!
In the 50's you could barely afford to buy a B&W TV set to drive home in your car and to put in your house!
Now you can easily afford a COLOR TV set to drag home on foot and watch from your cheap studio apartment that you can barely afford!
What was the question again??

Let's see... the sh*tter's indoors now, black people and women count as "whole people", all in all the only real decline in "quality of life" may have happened to white men, who don't have any good servants any more...
What do you think?
