The Archbishop of Canterbury has been made an honorary druid as a compliment to his erudition. Becoming a member of the Gorsedd of Bards is an honour bestowed on Welsh speakers who have distinguished themselves artistically or intellectually. It does not imply any pagan involvement. http://www.druidorder.demon.co.uk/gorsedd_bards.htm

However, he has come in for some criticism for accepting this honour

Is this really true? I read the Wikipedia article and the church biography. I did find references that said he's a Druid, but they seemed to be by cranky people who might not like him anyway just because he's Anglo-Catholic.

Edit: See link below. It sounds like the Queen belongs to this Druid group too.

"By joining the druid bards - which include the Queen, opera singer Bryn Terfel and Welsh rugby star Gareth Edwards - Dr Williams has been attacked for "dabbling" in a non-Christian faith.

"But Dr Cathryn Charnell-White, an expert on the group's founder, Edward Williams, says: "There's no pagan link there at all."

"The Eisteddfod druids are Edward Williams's druids. Other druids stem more from the traditional or popular vision of druidism." "

I hardly see how believing in the great sky fairy makes one particularly learned or wise. However by doing so he lives rent free and has an income in excess of £50,000pa. Quite a smart cookie, wouldn't you agree?

Rowan Williams.

Too bad Druidism isn't a cult though.

No, he's involved in a cultural group that has no connection to non-Christian religious elements other than the name.
