I'm having budgetary issues and need to know which to do first.... The tile would be much cheaper to do right now though.
Which would you do?

depends on how much you hate the countertop and floor. Which do you hate the most? The counter will cost more than the floor. If you saw my hideous counter, you would understand. We replaced it and the floor and love it. Good luck!!!

Depends on your situation. If you have young children, I would avoid either. Corian or other similar solid countertops are much less expensive than granite, more durable, and in many cases offer more options. Granite is heavy and can crack.

As for the tile floor, I like tile in the kitchen. But again, if you have small children, you could be replacing tiles (not an easy task) fairly often.

Given the choice between the two, I would choose tile floors myself.

I would tile the Floors. Looking at just a piece of tile doesn't give you the whole look as would having your floor done. This will also help you in deciding what counter would go best ( color, material, style )
Another alternative to granite is quartz. It is much cheaper, certified by national food and safety, and available at Home Depot, often on sale....
Hmmm. You could also tile your counter tops, very popular in the 60's and making a huge come back today with all of the new products on the market.

Good Luck....

We had budgetary issues, too, and elected to go with slate floors. Slate is not nearly as hard as tile, and so beautiful. We LOVE it. We haven't found it to be particularly colder than any other uncarpeted surface.
Then we found some tiles on close-out and tiled our countertops ourselves. Now we wouldn't trade our countertops for granite for anything in the world.

Granite countertops are waaaay expensive. I had a similar issue and decided to tile the floor first and then decided to tile the countertops with smaller tiles in a complementary color - very nice effect.

I don't see the point in tiling the floor of a kitchen. Drop one pot and the floor is cracked forever. DO the granite countertops. That's classy!

I would do the counter tops. I don't have tile floors in my kitchen, but several friends do and they are very unhappy. They say the tile is cold, hard on their feet and backs, and very unforgiving if you accidentally drop something on it. I am saving for Pergo floors in my kitchen. Granite countertops are on my list too...good luck!

Granite countertops would be the first choice as the overall value of the house increases if you are planing to sell it someday plus it is so beautiful...
it by itself gives a classy feel to the kitchen...and you are just going to love cooking there...

good luck!!!

Yes it very well can. Especially with the white cabinets, it ll set each other off well. In fact I did a multi million dollar house with a semi peachy colored floor with Ubatuba tops .. I took 3x3 pcs of Ubatuba tile and clipped a corner of the floor tile to tie it all together. She had cherry cabinets would be the only difference. I also did a combo of natural stone and small pcs of Ubatuba for the back splash. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
