I think your cat is the perfect demographic for FLUTD (feline lower urinary tract disease), especially the type that is caused by crystals in the urine. We see it most frequently in cats 1 1/2 - 3 years of age who are on a dry-food only diet, especially if that diet consists of lower-quality brands such as Friskies, Cat Chow, Chef's Blend, etc. and also Iams. (Iams is generally a higher quality brand than the rest, but we've seen a very large number of urinary problems associated with this food.)

Seeing blood in the urine is reason enough to call the veterinarian right away. Some other signs also associated with this condition (FLUTD) are straining or crying while urinating, urinating frequent and small amounts and urinating outside of the box. This condition can progress into a urethral obstruction which is fatal if not treated immediately. The blockage causes urine to back up into the kidneys and basically causes the cat to poison itself.

If caught before a blockage results, your kitty may simply need an anti-inflammatory, antibiotics and possibly a change in diet. If a blockage occurs, a urinary and intravenous catheter will need to be placed followed by 2-3 days of intensive care in the hospital. So please don't wait.

As far as the fiberglass is concerned - that can cause all sorts of problems too, but I doubt it is causing the blood in the urine. Most likely the symptoms would be GI related (gastro-intestinal). Of course, the blood you're seeing may very well be coming from the anus and not the penis! If so, a trip to the vet is still in order.

Good luck!

I am not quite sure what the actual diagnosis would be, but you should see a veterinarian ASAP. It is very possible that it is what Seattle said, but regardless that sounds very serious whatever it may be. Judging by what you're saying about the fiberglass, the cat may be cut either externally, internally, or both. Anything that involves blood should be taken seriously.

I hope all goes well, and in the future, keep your cat away from fiberglass and other such materials.

Last year my beautiful Manx cat Theodore went out for the evening and never came back. I love cats and the house didn't feel the same without one, so I picked up Lola from a rescue centre. She was very frightened and would pee all over the house. I found Cat Spraying No More on the internet and the techniques worked almost immediately. I haven't had a problem with Lola since. Amazing!

Can't stop your cat peeing in the house? Then worry no more...

I thing that is a very dangerous situation for your cat. Why is it allowed to go there???? Fiberglass is nothing to be exposed to for humans or animals!!!!I would take him to the vet to find out what his problem is. Could also be urinary tract infection, but you need to do something about your cats, and the fiberglass situation, especially when there are other cats involved!!ASAP

You shouldn't be having a cat, cats or any other form of animal if you are letting them into a space with fiberglass. You wouldn't do it with kids and trust me if your child was peeing blood you'd take him to the doctor right? Please take the cat to the vet.

Hi Sara...hematuria (blood in urine) is indicative of a lower urinary tract disorder. Some cats will develop partial or full urethral obstructions and this can become life-threatening within 24-48 hours.

Although that is a poor place for your pet to be going, a consultation with a vet is essential. Your feline could be suffering from a urinary trac infection, bladder infection, renal arrest or feline leukemia. Blood in urine is never good.
