There's nothing wrong with a little pat on the bum if they have been bad, but hitting hard enough to hurt them is wrong. Would you want your dog to hate you?

Alpha do not dish out critical wounds to dogs who get out of line. Critical wounds within packs more often occur when another dog challenges the alpha for position and that's not the same circumstance where a correction would be issued. I have thumbed mine on the behind if he's not responding otherwise but its generally just enough to get his attention to the direction I'm trying to give him. Positive training actually has documented much better and faster results with dog training. When the dog behaves as you want he gets a reward, he's more likely to remember that than a swat on the rear when he's deciding between his bone and your brand new shoes.

Consider this. On a 30 pound dog 5 pounds of extra weight is about the same as a human carrying an extra 40 pounds on a person. How do you think the strength of your hand striking that dog translates? Your dog might be more weight but the fact is humans can inadvertantly inflict alot of damage with our hands without even realizing it until its too late. A light smack, just enough for the dog to feel it is all that is necessary if you really find physical training necessary, I prefer the rear to the nose, when my dogs have refused to respond to me and I tried to bop them on the nose they've turned and I've almost gotten eyes instead

You should read a book, or do some research. Hitting a dog does not teach them anything, well maybe they will remember that you did hit him/her, and the next time you try to hit them they may possibly try and strike back, and do more to you than a swat on the butt.
Dogs can be trained without being swatted. A loud, strong, tone will get there attention, no need for a swat. Routine training on a daily basis will teach them. They are not stupid, and they will learn, and become the pet you love. Our pets will do anything for us, all they want is to be loved, not abused. That is why there are LAWS. I have never had to hit any of my dogs, or any pet that I ever worked with. Go online, buy a book, do whatever you have to in order to get your dog to be the dog you love, and loves you back unconditionally until the day they pass. They are animals, we are the Humans. Are we not the ones to be more intelligent?
Abuse is abuse, what would you say if you saw someone swatting their child?

I'm sorry, but you don't know very much about dog pack behavior. The alpha dog in a pack will not critically wound another dog for getting out of line - an all-out fight between the alpha and a subordinate dog is a last resort when all other warnings have been ignored.

Dogs use body language, and go through a lot of warning before they would actually attack another dog for "getting out of line". The first thing an alpha dog would do would be to stiffen up and stare at the other dog. At this point, the other dog usually backs down. If the other dog keeps it up, the alpha might correct him by biting his neck or muzzle to get him to submit - those are not harsh attack bites, but rather, "hold" bites that generally don't do damage. If the other dog submits, everyone goes about their day.

Hitting a dog does not teach the dog anything other than being afraid of your hand - especially since humans don't give the same body language warnings (stiffening up, narrow eyes, curled lips) that another dog might give before escalating to the next step. Humans are quick to just turn around and hit - that teaches your dog to either hide any warnings he might've given for the behavior he was about to do (such as growling, for example) or it teaches the dog to simply be afraid of the human who hits "without reason".

There are lots of way to correct a dog for unacceptable behavior, such as a loud noise - "Pfui!" or "Uh-uh!", or clapping your hands - or a leash / collar correction that work well and are much easier understood by the dog than random smacking them.

Because it really doesn't teach the dog anything. Smacking your dog - whether a beating or a pat on the bum may fix the problem at the moment but the dog will do that behavior again when you're not around. And the dog doesn't understand you hurting him/her if you find the "situation" AFTER it's been done. It causes confusion and anxiety.

If you want a dog to learn you have to teach it. Training will help the dog to maintain the information to thrive in any household. It will respect you - not fear you (BIG difference) and will know its limits and bounderies. It will stop the behavior all the time not just when you're around to avoid a beating.

That's why you shouldn't smack your dog.

The alpha dog, or alpha wolf for that matter, will NOT critically wound another dog. It makes its point with a nip and a growl, and then it lets up. You have been watching too many cartoon shows apparently.

Study basic psychology. You can train an animal (or a human) much faster and easier and better if you don't beat them. The end result is an animal (or a human) that behaves better and is not afraid of you, but enjoys being with you. If you have to beat an animal to train it, you're a poor trainer, and no better than any other sadist, IMNSHO.

I think the spanking issue has gotten so out of control-- concerning both animals AND children. I was spanked as a child (NOT beaten) and I turned out perfectly well-adjusted and never embarrassed my parents. We spanked our dogs too when it was needed, and they were loving members of our family.

I spank my dog now, one or two swats on the bum, when applicable, but I find that he's more affected by my disappointment with him than he is with the physical discipline.

I think he understands the physical correction better because that is what his mother or alpha dog would do to correct his behavior, but that does not mean I beat the poor animal. And I NEVER hit with anything other than an open palm to the base of his tail.

Go ahead and correct your dog with however you see fit, so long as you are doing it responsibly. Correct with your head, not your emotions.

Real dog training does revolve around understanding the Alpha thing. But a little information is a bad thing.... the alpha also takes care of his pack. Anyone who knows about dogs and training knows hitting the dog is counter productive. Read a book dammit.

an alpha dog may wound another dog that gets out of line. but thats a dog to dog understanding. we are human so its totally different. you will never teach your dog anyhing by hitting/smaking or yelling at it. you need to use the correct tone and control of voice along with the positive commands for your dog to learn and appreciate you. its a whole different ball game from dog to dog and human to dog.

to answer your question ... they always learn.?.......... they always learn to fear you, hate you , NOT love you like a dog should... also that is what makes dogs turn is learning pain.. how do you think they teach pit dogs to fight they teach them pain from early on and it makes them so they cause pain back... that is why there are sooooooo many dogs that bite.. they should be pets almost children.. think about it unless your pure evil you wouldnt hit a six month old baby would you? its the same dam# thing.. the alpha dog thing sounds good in theory but what happens in the wild when the alpha dog gets old?! think about it the next stronger male dog fights him to either kill him or drive him out so he can take the place.... would you like to wake up in the morning with a dog at your throat who decided HE wanted to be the ALPHA DOG?? just think about it... find a dog trainer or one of those classes who teach you HOW to train a dog... heck just watch the dog whisperer he doesnt hit them he just shows them whos boss!!

What's wrong is that you're not a dog.

There is a higher level of expectation for human beings; we're higher up on the food chain. Dogs act instinctively towards each other; if humans resorted to base instinctive behavior, think about what this world might be like. We live with rules and laws and expectations because we are evolved enough to understand the consequences of our actions.

Hitting a dog is teaching a dog to fear you, not to respect you. Living in fear is no life for a dog (or a human, for that matter).

I hope you don't have a dog; you don't deserve one with a mentality like that.
