Most of the animal shelters have specific requirements for volunteers. The cat shelter that I work with requires volunteers to be at least 14 years of age, but there are limited responsibilities for those volunteers. For example, volunteers under 18 would not be allowed in specific areas of the shelter that adult volunteers would be, such as the medical area.

Every shelter will have its own specific rules. I would suggest that you contact the specific shelter that you want to work with. You can find some of the local contacts through your local volunteer resource center or the United Way:

Good luck!

I would think it would vary by shelter. Just give them a call and ask.
