What you should do is withdraw cash at an ATM at the airport. You'll get better rates than Travelex or any of the other bureau de changes.

The best way to get Pounds is to use your bank card. Check with your bank before you go to the UK to make sure that it will work. Many banks in Europe do not charge a transaction fee, and by using ATM machines, you don't get nailed on currency exchange fees as badly as you would if you used one of those currency exchange places at the airport, etc.

You can exchange USD at a US bank before departure or at any UK bank. Personally I always just use my cash card when travelling overseas as this means you don't have to carry large amounts of cash with you. Another alternative is travellers checks which you can cash as you need them at UK banks. I would advise against using a credit card in foreign cash machines, though it will work, they charge you a fortune.

To get the best exchange rate, you should charge as much as possible on your Visa (not AMEX) card. My AMEX card charges me a surchage for every foreign currency transaction. Visa does not, and it gets wonderful rates.
If you really need British pounds to spend, then an ATM once you get to England is your best bet for a good exchange rate.
