My boyfriend is 22, he has smoked about 12 cigarettes a day since he was 17. We are moving in together soon, and he is trying to quit. I am sooooo happy for him! But how can I help him? Are there any of those "systems" that actually work when they claim to help people quit smoking?? I know how hard this is going to be on him and I want to help make it easier... Any suggestions?

I never asked him to quit, he told me he wanted to quit for me and our relationship, so please don't think that I am forcing him to do so. I was just wondering what I could do to help him with out upsetting him.

Quitting smoking is very difficult, and for many people it is the hardest single thing they will do in their lives. But considering the alternative, it is always worth it. Because of the nature of addiction, the motivation, and decision to quit smoking ultimately has to come from inside oneself.
But that is not to say there is nothing you can do to help. The biggest thing you can do is simply to encourage him. Make a habit of talking to him about his day and about his feelings every day. let him know that you are there for him and will help him any way you can. Praise him and compliment him every day that he does not smoke. If he does give in and has to have one, show that you are dissapointed, but you still love him and understand that it is difficult to quit. Don't worry if he gets annoyed or snaps at you sometimes, believe me, everybody likes praise, especially if it is consistent. Never nag him, insult him, or demean him if he screws up Try not to lose your temper, unless he deliberately lied to you. This will only make it harder for him.
It is Ironic that the guilt and shame involved in smoking, is part of what drives people to keep trying to get the feeling of calm and control from smoking. They know it's dangerous, and it's nasty and offensive, but they believe that as long as they can get their next fix they can take control of the situation.
Well I hope this helps you.....

If ou are motivated enough you can do whatever you set your entire mind to. The day I found out I was pregnant I didn't even smoke a butt on the way to the store to buy the test. I still haven't and I quit cold turkey on September 26, 2006.
I think that quitting was the easiest part for me. Especially the first week. Its once months have elapsed and you get a nic fit and feel the urge. Its important to be strong and set mini goals for yourself. Don't say I am quitting. Say I am not smoking today.

I quit last July & I used Nicabate Patches & i chewed 1nicorette gum a day for two weeks & then switched to pk etc
he will often think to himself I'll have a smoke now (& that is purely only habit) i used to just say to myself but i don't smoke anymore & i would be proud that i could stop
that went on for quite a while & i think it was all the self talk that got me through it !!
i took more than 3 months to quit &
i stayed on the 2nd & 3rd step longer & the chemist said that is better than smoking
You can tell him how proud you are of him & that he must love all the extra money as well
a lot of people have a few goes at giving up but if he sees how you are so proud & happy he may stay off them but don't get angry if he stuffs up & smokes again
just say to try later on

here r some ideas to help your boyfriend quit smoking:
~make a list of reaons why you want to quit smoking and read the list whenever you have the urge to smoke!
~set small goals. try quiting one day at a time. every year the american cancer society sponsors the "Great American Smoke-out," a campaign that calls for all smokers to avoid smoking for one day!
~if possible, avoid being with people who smoke and stay away from places where lots of smokers hang out.
~change any habits you have that are linked to smoking. For example, if you smoke after a meal, take a short walk instead and learn about other methods of relaxing and relieveing stress.
~exercise when you feel the urge to use tobacco. Stretch, take deep breaths, go for a walk, or take a ride on your bike, etc.
~think positively, seek encouragement from you non-smoking friends.
~eat healthful snacks instead of reaching for tobacco.
i wish you and him the best of luck, i know you can accomplsih this!

Okay, first of all have him Quit BEFORE you move in together. Living with someone or even being around someone trying to quit is TORTURE!!!!!! Mood swing mania! Be prepared!
I quit smoking accidentally, by smoking a pack of really really bad tasting cigarettes. So that's my tried & true tip! Have him switch brands, something bad, it worked for me!
Good Luck, to both of you!

How about you don't force him to quit smoking? If he really wants to quit smoking he will. He doesn't need you. You'll probably make it worse actually cause when my friend tried to stop she was just constantly pissed off & anytime anybody tried to "help her" she bit their head off.

First, tell him to lick a dirty ash tray and tell him that that's what he tastes like when you kiss him.
Secondly, tell him that you're not interested in investing your valuable time in love, emotions and feelings with a person that is in the process of killing himself. Why waste your time if all of sudden the person kicks off with a smoking related disease leaving you with 3 kids and no life ahead of you? Sounds like a very bad investment to me.
THirdly, smoking leads to: pancreatitis, emphysema, carcinoma, arteriosclerosis, microaneurysms of the brain, strokes, atherosclerosis, depleted Vitamin C stores, decreased immune disease . . . and further more ... all his clothes stink.
Now ... D E C I D E for your own future! Consider yourself an excellent investment for anyone who wants to cherish you ... and to do that, they have to cherish themselves FIRST.
GOT IT ? ! ? My smoking dad died of pancreatic carcinoma with secondary atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), stroke and kidney shut down. Not Pretty.
NEVER AGAIN !
