I would have to say best heavy gun yes.

the high velocity of the weapon made it a real killer.

until late in the war it was able to rip open most tanks, and only until it met the Russian heavy tanks was it the premiere weapon of choice.

AA guns, anti-tank and mounted on tanks, highly versatile and monstrously deadly.

I was trying to find the quote I had read about the 88, forgive me i have to paraphrase.

During the Battles in Africa a British officer had been captured after his tank unit was wiped out by German 88's.

Being the proud old soldier he was he said to his captors of the 88's.

"It's not fair to use an anti aircraft gun against tanks."

A German who could speak English replied.

"It's not fair using tanks our other guns can't stop."

For the life of me I can't find the original quote, but I think it sums up the 88 nicely.

Among the dual purpose weapons I would be in full agreement. However for heavier hitting power the M-2 Long tom couldn't be beat. As a pure flak cannon no there were better the American radar guided with it's own fire control computer 120mm cannon was taking down V-1's on a regular basis. When it came to killing tanks you would be hard pressed to find better.
