I am trying to organize an engagement party for my brother in law. They will have about 50 people on the guest list. They want to have an open bar and stationed appitizers. Does anyone know of any restaurants or bars that have a nice, private event space?

Skip the Phillips Flagship in DC. The food is institutional and the service is horrible.

Finding a retaurant that can handle 50 and keep it sort of private is tough. Often in places will say they can but hurry things along so they can attend to their other business. Often the staff is just not used to doing it. Then there is the negotiating the menu, prices and how things will progress through the evening. You need to be clear on this. When you find something get there early and identify the main server and speak with the manager. They will need to come to you through the evening and ask about timing.

Another thing is the whole open bar thing. Most restaurants won't really do it. They may quote you a flat price but slow the service a bit to save money. Or have their servers ring the drinks to account for them to the amount you agreed. Believe you me you will reach that amount regardless of what your guests drink.

Best thing is to use a decent hotel. That's another thing you have to think about is when you have an open bar some will drink slow or not at all since they have to drive. You may have some people from out of town. Hence the hotel thing so everyone can just relax.

Westfields Convention Center in Fairfax is excellent. They know the route and can make things nice. The rooms are excellent as well. Sure you can look forever for a restaurant that can do it but this is the easiest and ultimately the most nonhassle way to go.

There are so many around the area, please be more specific about the where about. Find some big restaurant, they have party room space (Clyde's in Tysons, but hard to find the place). Some restaurant will rent out the whole space for the night, but it depend on the day of the week. You might be able to do it on Sunday night. Or the Boat thing is nice -- Spirit of Washington.
