Lots of people who smoke get lung cancer, but many don't. By the same logic many people who do not smoke get it. Many things can cause it, only a few causes have been found and documented.
Stage 4 is pretty serious, if shes having treatment then she stands a good chance of living out her remaining time (impossible to say how long that will be!) with a good quality of life.

Stage 4 is the most serious stage of lung cancer. That means the cancer has spread from the spot where it started to other parts of the body. It is difficult to treat because it has spread, and the treatments that affect every area to which it has spread (if they can even tell how far it's gone) are strong and very hard on the body. An elderly person often has a much harder time dealing with the treatments because they may have other health issues.
We can't be sure why some people get lung cancer even though they never smoked. She may have been exposed to cigarette smoke or other pollutants at a job, perhaps she was exposed to chemicals or pollutants before many of the environmental laws were put into effect. There are other causes also.
All you can really do at this point is support the decision she makes regarding her treatment. You don't say how old she is, but she will be told the options she has, and with her doctors and family will decide what is best for her.
One of my best friends died of cancer last weekend. When she told me there was no hope for her, as it was very sudden, I wrote her a letter telling her why I loved being her friend. I put some serious things and some funny things in the letter; it wasn't a sad thing. Take this opportunity to let your grandma know how much you love her. You don't have to be sad or negative...you can tell her in a poem or letter or in person how much she means to you and why. You can be encouraging and even a little silly, if you and she laugh together. She will love knowing how you feel, and you will have no regrets that you left things unsaid if she doesn't live through this health crisis.
Good luck to you and your family.

Ive Had Lung cancer twice.first in 1982,second 1987,results was i had upper lobes removed in both lungs,I'm not on oxygen, and am very limited on what i cant do.I WAS A SMOKER ON THE FIRST ONE,THE SECOND ONE,AGENT ORANGE,FROM the Vietnam war.you do not have to smoke to get lung cancer,it can be passed on thru family Genes.BUT NOT EVERY FAMILY MEMBER WILL GET LUNG CANCE.BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE IS TO HAVE A COMPLETE X-Ray of your lungs once a year, thats what saved me.

My heart goes out to you my friend, sadly my wonderful mum passed way on Jan 6Th 2007 of lung cancer.
She found out on November 28Th 2006 that she had cancer and on December 11th 2006 we found out that it was terminal and it had spread to her Lynth Nodes (sorry for the spelling) and they also found a lump in her breast.
he hospital told my brother, sister and I that mum had between 1-2 months life expectancy, but sadly on Jan 2nd 07 she developed an infection on her chest and was to weak to fight it off and she passed away 4 days later.
Mum had previously been a smoker but had given up before she got sick.
Both my grandparents on mum's side died from cancer and neither of them ever smoked or drank, so maybe it is genetic.
Give your grandma a huge hug from me and enjoy every single moment with her!
Take care. x x x
