My breast has been swollen off & on for about a week. I have seen the DR. & she doesn't seem concerned with this. I haven't yet experienced redness but wondering if anyone has had this as a side affect? Any solutions? I guess I can't ice it because they don't want extreme heat or cold due to that can cause problems too. They just said take ibuprofen?

Yes, this happens, take the ibuprofen. If the pain isn't manageable that way, go back to the doc for something else.

God bless this woman and her family during this time of great need. Rid her body of the cancer and ease her pain and fear.

There, I will pray and everyone who reads this will pray too!

As a former mammographer, I do have a little knowledge of this...You breast will get inflamed and probably very red and hard by the time your treatments are done. When your treatments were planned, you probably had to lay there for a while and they put marks on you, measured you, right? They also constructed a lead shaped shield that fits over the beam, unique to you, to only radiate the tumor area. So, yes, it is only concentrated on the tumor site. truthfully, many women have radiation induced hardness in the area for a few years after the treatments. It is like scar tissue. When you have another mammogram, AND YOU WILL< YOU BETTER, you will notice this area is more tender. It is so important that you allow the mammographer to compress adequately on this site, because the tissue will be denser (scar). Avoid caffeine, take some ibuprofen an hour before your mammo, and let her get some good films...

Radiation, like surgery is a local treatment. It only treats the area to which the radiation is delivered. Some swelling is to be expected, as is the development of some redness of the skin (assuming you are getting external beam radiation). Discuss it with your radiotherapist as I have not heard that ice will have a adverse affect on radiation treatment. It will go away after the treatment is complete, although is will take several months or more to completely resolve.
