I am about at the point where I think that the US should refuse to provide air support to British units.
Tell them to supply their own close air - and see how well they do!

All I would like to say the the person saying the Americans should stop providing close air cover is "tit for tat" you stop providing cover and we'll pull out completely, it's not as if we have gotten anything out of this as your government has dished up all the rebuilding contracts to US companies. As far as I have seen, we asked the yanks for all evidence, it was denied there was anything so we accepted this, then after pushing it was said there is a video but it was classified it's only now that it's been leaked to the press that it's be allowed to be viewed by the coroner and the family. The pilots have not been reprehanded but the person who leaked it is in trouble! The pilots should be forced to confront the family over this and if the yanks refuse then extradition precedings should be filed. The family need closure on this.

In any war, friendly-fires are bound to occur. Most people agree and accept that. But the whole controversy came out because of the injustice committed to the family of the killed British soldier. For years, the family had been struggling to know the details about the soldier's death. The British military investigators at the beginning, deceived the family by denying that there was a video transcript outlining the events that led to the British soldier's death. Then after a long time, the British investigators admitted to the family that there is indeed a video, but that the family weren't allowed to watch it, because the video belongs to the U.S. military. The Pentagon tried to downplay the event and declined to cooperate with the British investigation. The Pentagon tried to obstruct the facts by telling the British investigators that the video is a property of the U.S. government, and therefore the British military don't have the right to use the video for its investigation.
Now as we all know it, the video suddenly came out into the open through the news media. The Pentagon had to change its position by issuing a statement saying that the British can now use the video on the investigations.
From 2003 to 2007, that's how long the painful ordeal the family had to endure before they finally learn the whole truth about their loved one's death.
Would it be alright for any British or American family who lost a loved one in the war to be deceived by the military and never told of the whole truth on the circumstances behind their soldier's death?. How would the family feel about being betrayed by the very same institution to which their soldier gave his life for?.

As is normal some of the answers are inaccurate nonsense but that's life. In war accidents happen and the best thing is to stand up and say it happened and try to ensure it doesn't happen again.
The fact that the MOD lied in their teeth about the incident is quite normal practise nowadays after all if Bliar can do it every other day why can't they.My sympathies are for the soldiers family who have been through more than enough.
The Coroner is getting 'the push'? Quite normal for this government, remember Dr.Kelly?.

Of course there have always been unfortunate deaths caused by "friendly fire". It happened in both world wars by both Allied and Axis forces and it happened in the Falklands conflict. I am sure it will happen again.
In the incident which happened in Iraq the disgusting thing that occurred was not that it happened at all but that the U.S. military went to such lengths to try to deny that there was any evidence and when it was proved that video footage existed, they then went on the defensive and tried to have it suppressed as it was a "military secret".
They appear to be making vague threats of "legal action" but I am sure that the video clip will soon be all over the internet if it isn't already. Do they plan to sue the whole world?
The relatives of the soldier who was killed would, no doubt, have accepted that it was a terrible accident but their suffering would perhaps have been lessened if the U.S. forces had accepted the responsibility and issued an unconditional apology.

At last, someone with common sense!!! Those of us with a level head on our shoulders realise it was a tragic accident, which does and will happen,in the theatre of war. With some of the posts on here about this subject,it makes me ashamed to say I'm British.

This was atragedy made worse by the posturing of the MOD & Pentagon. A terrible mistake that should have been made public and dealt with. Strange thing is though the outspoken Coroner will not have his temporary contract renewed.

DKlyde...you are a tool!! Go ahead give me a thumbs down and report me if you wish, but at the end of the day you still wouldn't be worthy of cleaning my boots!
Friendly fire accidents have been a part of war since the beginning of recorded history. Modern armies take great measures to prevent friendly fire but in the fog of war, it's unavoidable.

Yes the good ol Americans did kill some of our guys, but don't forget that they didn't mean to. They did not go out specifically to kill UK forces. Hey accidents DO happen... tragic but true. The pilots were out to get the bad guys, not fellow troops.
I am in the RAF and believe me... SH*T happens, mostly though we do get the bad guys and not the friendlies! I feel deeply for the families of all those involved / Killed / hurt but also for the pilots who did this.
