Hi. My girlfriend can't control her anger. Last argument we had, she started acting as a mentally sick person. She looses control, and I've tried to help her but nothing seems to work. Inhaling, exhaling air, meditating, counting 1 to 50, Nothing! when she finishes, she starts crying because she realizes all the damage she's done, but she can't control herself. She's ashamed, and sorry but then she does it again. Do you know any pills, herbs, anything that we might try to prevent this behavior? maybe we should go to a doctor, but before taking that step, any advice? thank you!

I am currently on Lexapro, it is a low dose anti anxiety med. and it works wonders without making you too loopy like lots of meds do. Anger is very hard to control as you have seen, she probably won't find much luck other than going to see a doctor about it. Good Luck~

Pills and herbs and such are only a band-aid for the problem. First, the problem needs to be identified (obviously anger here), then look to sources that can control it--family doctor is a good start. He can rule out any chemical imbalances or suggest diet changes. Counseling would also be helpful here. You would find out the root cause of the anger (ruling out medical first) and build ways to manage the anger and modify the behaviour. Pills can certainly help, but only with maximum potential when taken in conjunction with counseling and doctor monitoring. My source is "been there-done that" it worked for me. Good luck.

You can try Saint John's Wart or even Valerian Root. Either have a soothing effect on a person's psyche. However, they don't work immediately. The system has to digest any medicine before it can be effective.

In the meantime- have you tried just giving her a big bear hug and not letting go until she calms down? I've seen this work many times.

Let me know if you get a good answer...I have a similar problem (with myself). I don't actually physically damage important things. I did throw and office chair across the room.

I hate it. I think mine may be related to hormones...I have mood swings, and it sucks. I try super hard to control my anger around my bf, but it doesn't always work. And I feel terrible, as he doesn't deserve it.

I understand where she is coming from though. It is so embarassing.

i would suggest a 12-step program. working the steps will teach her a lot about why she acts the way she acts and will offer techniques or ways to handle an outburst before it escalates. anger management classes are wonderful - she just has to WANT to change for it to work.

She may have lack of serotonin. Maybe Paxil will help. I advised joint counseling to see if that helps.
