The way many teens drive today - I would suggest buying the lad a Yugo with a surfboard attached to the roof. Its slow, its ugly and no one wants it. Tell your son its "Adopt an ugly pet week" and suggest to him, the Beach Boys, used to own it.
Okay - bad joke, but in case it did bring a sly upturned devious smirk to your lips - mission accomplished.
On a serious note - never get a teen a large SUV. Its like putting a ten year old in charge of a tank and those machines don't do fender benders - they eat cars. And have a massive rear blind spot that has hurt many a small child who wanders behind those beasts when backing up.

I think its a bad plan. First reason is studies have shown that kids in over sized or larger vehicle's have a much higher chance of being in an accident. Second the gas prices are going to go back up so unless you want to always pay for his gas I would at least recommend getting one with the best MPG, Also with an SUV he will be more likely to have more people in the car at a time increasing the risk of him becoming distracted. If he has an accident while it is filled with other kids you are responsible so I would carry a very large insurance policy. The Honda CRV has the best MPG of the group but I wouldn't recommend it unless you want him to get picked on. The Nissan Murano is a good choice if you don't mind spending the money. I know I sound like an old person but I'm only 21 It hasn't been that long since I have been cramped in to an explorer with 12 people. The best thing that every happed was me selling it and getting a car. The reason is I didn't have to give 12 friends rides every where and the gas savings was great, 90% of the time I didn't need that room, and my used 03' BMW 330xi is much more fun to drive and the payments are not any higher than what my 02' explorer were. Just some food for thought hope it helps.

It is a pretty big SUV, and has a lot of distracting bells and whistles. A 16yr old and a V8 also do not mix all that well. With a heavy foot, he will be likely to get maybe 13mpg. They are not very agile, and have not faired all that well in crash tests. In general, the GM SUV's (Trailblazer/Envoy/9-7X) are really not good vehicles anyway. It is a fairly old design that handles poorly, is unreliable and depreciates rapidly. Insurance is likely to be on the high side as well.
It does beg the question, why does he warrant such a nice vehicle as a first car anyway? Get him a 5-6 year old car with airbags and save a lot of money. Most of us started out in older cars and managed to survive. A smaller car that he can squeeze fewer people into is also not a bad idea (less distraction and less liability for you). And if he cops an attitude, or gets lousy grades and you take away the keys , it would be a lot easier to stomach an inexpensive car sitting and not getting used.

no. I'm 17 and I think unless kids are going to pay for the car themselves they should buy a used car that will be easy to replace if he gets in an accident. My parents tell me all the time to stop looking at cars for sale because you got a car already. They think that my 96' chevy s-10 2 door truck is the best car in the world for me even though i don't like it because it is only 4 cylinder, 2wd, three seater, small bed and cheap they think if I had a nicer car I would try crazy stuff w/ it. Even though I don't like it they are right. I have taken off the passenger mirror and I have gotten it stuck in a ditch on the shoulder of the road and i have scratched it up on the side and I can barely afford to drive it they are right because if I had a nicer car I would have more costs to repair the things I have done in this car. Also there is a kid that lives w/ his grandparents and they just bought a new chevy heavy duty truck that they let him drive to school every day and we always make fun of him for not having a car when we talk about our cars and he starts talking about the truck as if it were his. It just makes him look spoiled because he doesn't have a job and drives the nicest, most exspensive car to school and we all work just to drive our cheap cars. so to make a long story short, get him a cheap reliable car that he can have fun with and will be easily replaceable and affordable.

At 16 he sould be able to know what he likes.. why not reach a compromise with him? Is that what he wants?
And by the way, Volvo has the heads-up over Saab in safety-ratings.

No, it's an expensive, gussied up Trailblazer, and it's not particularly safe. I see no reason to buy one. Saab sedans are Ok, though.
