no matter what you use the data will still be on your hard drive. you can make it virtually impossible to recover but not impossible.

Short answer is it's impossible (apparently). Rumour has it that the CIA and suchlike can (if they wanted to) read a hard disk that has been wiped even 9 times...
Dariks Boot and Nuke (dban) is pretty good and free i believe.
