an ice chest with ice in it.
How long of a power failure? If it is just a couple hours or so- they will be fine left alone.

Don't open the door to the appliance(s) (unless absolutely necessary). The foods should be fine for an hour or 2.
If the power-outage is going to be much longer, go buy some dry ice and put it in the fridge and freezer.
If the power-outage will be for days, kiss the food goodbye. But, If there was something really valuable in the freezer, consider the cost of a generator.

depending how long, try not to open the refrigerator that much, that will keep the cold air in . other wise buy a lot of ice and put it in a cooler, or maybe neighbors house, if they have power. good luck. and I think the electric company if there is an outage will give you what you lost out of it. but I would ask just to make sure how it works. good luck.

Having just gone a week without power, as long as yoy keep the door shut your refigerator should keep everything for about 24 hours. After that I worry about things and will toss them anyway. But even after 24 hours our ice cream was just starting to melt, it was kind of like soft serve, but ice cream is a tricky thing.
In most cases your power will be returned before you need to do anything. But if you must, dry ice is a good alternative if you must. Heck if it is cold enough outside and you can keep animals away from your food put it outside.

If you live in a cold place, you can take the food outside. SOunds weird but sometimes when I want my soda to cool up and I don't have any ice, I put it outside. It works better.
