Such examples would be of Brigham Young teaching Adam was God, and now most mormons deny it ever happened? Why is the mormon faith so secretive?

The mormon faith isn't secretive. It is true.

Do we really know who Adam is and what his relationship to God and Jesus Christ is? If the Holy Ghost is a separate entity from God and Jesus, wouldn't he be considered a "god" just as Heavenly Father and Jesus are? And if so...who is he? Why could he not be Adam?

Hey, I speculate about these things just like Brigham Young did. Not because I know anything about it, but because it's interesting to speculate about it. Of course, when I talk about it, people don't write it down and try to incorporate it into the scriptures.

If you want to ask questions about Mormon beliefs, ask questions about Mormon beliefs (i.e. official church doctrine) and not off-hand quotes from past leaders that are NOT included in official church doctrine. Be honest about the debate and you['ll find that people will be much less "secretive" with you. ;-)

I think others here have answered you very well regarding both your question and about the Brigham Young teachings. I have never been secretive or misleading about what I believe and will always give someone as straight an answer as I can. That being said, no one ever has all the answers as we are human and continually learning to be more like God. If you ask questions about our actual doctrine I will always answer them. Sorry if you have asked the wrong people or haven't gotten the answers you are looking for. Admittedly, there are those who have limited knowledge about obscure or deep doctrines, but that is not a bad thing. The most important thing we can do is build a strong relationship with Jesus Christ, our Savior, and with God. I'm pretty certain everything else will fall into place if we do this. Good luck.

There are all kinds of mormon-haters out there that take any little thing, twist it a thousand ways, take it out of context, and then say "why do mormon's believe......"

Mormons don't profess to know everything. No religion does. However, there have been some revelations to Prophets that "go against the grain".

The real question is: "Are they prophets of God or not?"

The trick is to find the source of truth, and then align our thoughts, principles, and actions to it rather than waiting for something to come along that is tailor-made for us.

The Bible talks about those who make evil look good and good look evil. This has been going on for the history of the world. Seek the lord, seek his guidance, and seek truth. In doing so sincerely, your belief system can and will change. It may not be comfortable, but it's part of being humble.

There are some great answers, especially Someone Who Cares.

As others also have stated, most of the time, things said or beliefs are so mis-quoted or misunterstood, that is WHY we say that - because they ARE. Like people still believe we practice polygamy, well, we don't. The church did at one point, they don't anymore and people can't seem to grasp that. It would be the same as me TELLING you what YOU believe because someone told me...don't you think I should ask YOU what YOU believe???
Anyways, it is true that some of the things Brigham Young said were a little off-the-wall, but he did the best with what information he had then. That didn't change any doctrine and the church is still true.

Huh?

First of all, Brigham Young never taught that Adam and God were the same person. He taught that Adam and the archangel Michael were the same person.

As for being secretive, I'm a Mormon, and I've got nothing to hide. If you have questions about Mormonism, email me, and I'd be happy to answer them for you.

In 1897, Wilford Woodruff, then President of the Church, wrote a private letter concerning Young's teachings on Adam, stating:

The doctrine was never submitted to the councils of the Priesthood nor to the church for approval or ratification, and was never formally or otherwise accepted by the church. It is therefore in no sense binding upon the Church. Brigham Young's ‘bare mention’ was ‘without indubitable evidence and authority being given of its truth.’ Only the scripture, the ‘accepted word of God,’ is the Church's standard (Letter to A. Saxey, January 7, 1897, HDC).

That is because every time someone like you always bring up statements that is not consider our true doctrine.
Worse yet, many deliberately tell lies about LDS.

Secretive you say? would you like to tell us every thing about you , so we can make fun of it?
We are not secretive, to those who belief, they can know what ever they ask

i am going to refer you to www.exmormon.org
it will answer ALL of your mormonism questions by people who have escaped it.
Mormonism is secretive because there are a lot of really dark or scary things involved. Blood atonement, racism, etc...
they also believe god is from another planet and has a wife who is to holy or sacred to even speak of....
the founder of the mormon faith, joseph smith, gave several varying accounts of his 'enlightnement' showing that mostly its a religion built on fluff
