My son is 21 months old. I was wondering what are some signs that he is ready. Does anyone have tips to make it successful?

When he is old enough to walk around is the biggest consideration. Also take into acct his developmental age. Is he old enough to 'catch on' ?
I saw a piece on CNN that many now are trying to toilet train before the kids are even born. (they never did say how that worked, though)
Give potty training a try and if he doesn't seem to 'catch on' to the idea, then maybe give up and wait a few more months.
Play it by ear.

when my daughter was little I could always tell when she had to go because her diaper was warm just before. (I used cloth)

if you're waiting for him to tell you when it's time, you could be in for a long wait. Some kids need YOU to be in charge.

I got my daughter a potty when she was a year or so old, so that she could get a feel for it and be used to it's presence. We didn't actively try to get her to until she was 16 months or so. Some signs that the child is ready is going into a specific place to soil his/her diaper(doesn't have to be the bathroom), expresses displeasure at wetness, curiousity about the toliet, and some kind of regularity when it comes to elimination.
We had books we read only on the toliet, and the toliet made sounds when business was made. We also established a routine for trying the potty. And it's hard, but don't show frustration with it if the child doesn't catch on right away.
Sinking cheerios in the potty works for boys I have cared for in the past.

start introducing the potty around 24 months. When your child is home, keep a training potty in the room he frequents in the most. Talk to him about using the potty, and maybe even a reward system too. Also, it's easier it get them use to sitting and peeing before standing and peeing.

Good Luck!!

I'd start training as soon as the kid can walk well, so around 10 to 12 months. I think waiting until the kid is 2 or 3 is silly.

interest in anything to do with the potty. my son was trained by 20 months. my daughter--30 months. every kid is different. once you toss the diapers- do not bring them back, as this will cause your kid to become confused. good luck.

if the child doesn't catch in right away, he's not READY....if you let the child take the lead, there are no "tantrums" and it takes less than a week usually, then they are done-all trained. If you start too early, it becomes a power struggle and can screw them up for life-attitude as well intestines. It's too confusing to ask them to pee in one place and poop in another, and most kids can't control bowels as young as they can bladder.

My daughter began to show signs of rediness at this age. She just started to show interest in the toilet and saying she was wet or poopy. I started off by just talking about it to her and when she was ready-not too long afterwards, she started telling me she needed to potty.
