First to sweethoney...You are bound to have fried and messed up hair if you do a perm all by yourself. That's what a Curly Hair Specialist is for...!
Now to your question...go for it, if it's something you can handle. My inlaws own a hair salon and are both curly hair specialists, that's where I got my perm done. They know my hair and they know what to use. Although my perm did not last as long as I would've hoped for it did not make me look like a poodle because Peach rods were used. These are the second largest which gives you more natural waves instead of a tight spiral. My hair was trimmed immediately after it was permed so any fried ends were gone. I also did not wash it for the first 48 hours after perming. This is very important, to wait AT LEAST 48 hours, otherwise you could lose your curls. Like I said, the perm didn't last as long...because I have that type of fine, thin hair that doesn't take to styling very well. If yours is like this then it may do the same thing. I still have slight waves...I was just hoping for more curls.
When it comes to taking care of it...I don't care what anyone suggests to you...Use Pantene Relaxed & Natural conditioner. If your hair gets dry from the perm (which is normal), this conditioner will help that. And don't think a product designed for curly hair will help your curly hair. I made that mistake when I bought Garnier Fructis' conditioner for defining the curls...it made them flat and made my hair limp! (but this isn't just with perms. My husband has curly hair and it did the same thing)

ive been a stylist for 6 years, and honeslty have always hated doing perms. there very hard on ur hair and do coz damage.
They have a chemical in them that literely breakes down the bonds of your hair, this cant be good for it in any case, and to be honest i havent done 1 perm in the last 9 months, i talk to my clients and tell them my concerns and if they still want it then thats o.k too. there are plenty of other options if u just want a change. IF u find your hair limp with no body, try a different cut, with layers so that it lifts on the top. if u just want something different ..try a color, the color that we use is actually better for ur hair then most services, i say this bc the base in the color lines we use is KERITIN. when my hair feels yucky and dry, i actually put a color on it and BOY does that help. Perms are the opposite. talk to ur stylist, but if shes been doing hair along time..she may not know the chemical composition of perm solution, something they started teaching a few years back. if shes younger in the biz....ask her to explain what the perm chemicals do to your hair long term! i promise u..its no good.
hope this helps..good luck

Trust me NO NO NO NO this is a very bad idea.. I know what you want I always wanted the same thing that nice curly hair... but when you get a perm its a mess and your hair will just end up very very damaged and the curls will be horrible ive tried perms several times even using the wave perm. The best thing to do is to just curl it sometimes with rollers perming will just leave you with damaged ugly curls. Im 23 and I have long straigt hair also it sux sometimes I know but a perm wont help.. just trying to save you from making the mistake i did:)

Sure, if you want to. Perms are a pain in the butt in the beginning though. I haven't had one for years, and probably will never again. When they start growing out, then you have straight on top and dry and curly on the sides. Perms are a pain.

Yes. I had a perm and not only does it look great it makes me feel pretty! But have it done by a salon. Home perms are HORRIBLE.

I have had no luck with perms for the past few years, but i color my hair ALOT. the last one was so bad (my hair came to the middle of my back )they had to practically give me a buzz cut because it was so fried! My mom got hers done (at the beauty college, no less) they mixed between medium and large rods and it looks so natural and pretty i am totally jealous. she doesn't color her hair though!

I'm in the same situation as you, so I called my stylist. We talked about what would be the best options for me. I am getting one tomorrow. If you really want one, get one.
