Okay, I am going to try to think like a single guy...give me a second....Ok. If the pan was cheap, throw it out. If not, all the other soaking answers should work. But be careful with what you scrub it with, because you don't want to ruin the surface (which will consequently make everything you cook in it stick). Also, some people have a habit of leaving dishes sit in the sink for a very long time, and then wonder why they nearly have to call the Haz mat team in to do them. So my biggest tip is to rinse anything out that you are not planning on washing right away.

Get some ajax/comet or one of those cleansing agents. Sprinkle/or pour a bunch of it into the pan and fill with hot water. (oh--before that--scrape off as much of the burnt portion as you can and rinse out with hot water). Let it sit there for several hours. Even overnight if it's that bad. It should be much easier to clean the next morning. Use gloves...And keep trying-- Rice pudding is worth it!

aw bless you! Put some hot water and washing-up liquid in the saucepan and leave it for a while to allow the burnt rice to soften, so it will be easier to come off. Then get out a brillo pad and put in washing up liquid and start scrubbing away! =)

Leave it to soak in hot water with detergent, then scrap off the excess stuff using a plastic spatular, then scrub with a brillo pad - unless it was a non-stick pan, then just scrub with a scourer.

Add some dish washer powder or liquid (not the stuff you use in the sink, the stuff you put in your dishwasher) to it and add water. Let it sit over night. It should come clean with no problem.
