I only worked one month in 05 and completely forgot about filing my taxes. Tha employer I used to work for uses www.w2express.com to allow their employees to obtain a copy of their W2's. When I tried to get a copy of my 05's they tried to charge me $8. Is this normal? Isn't it my right to have access to this information for free?

Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040, after verifying your idenity they can provide transcripts of your income information for Tax year 2005. This can be mailed to you, or if you have access to a fax machine, possibly by fax.

By law your employer has to supply you with a copy of your W2 by a certain date. I have never heard of anyone having to pay for a copy of a W2. Maybe if you got one and lost it they could charge something for an addtional copy.
Because I own a business myself, I know that your employer has access to getting you a copy of your last years W2. I had an employee contact me after 2 years for a copy of a W2 and I gave it to him. I would call your previous employer and tell them to send you your W2. If they deny that to you, or try to charge you anything if they have never sent you one, I would tell them that you are contacting the IRS to report them. They don't want anything to do with them so Im sure they will comply.
Good Luck!

Your employer is allowed to charge you if this is a duplicate request. Call the H/R department to see if they sent one out to you from 2005. They should have the returned W-2's on file for this reason. If they cannot show that it was sent, request one be sent out. Verify the address with them, if you have not moved, there should be no issue.

No, employers are allowed to charge a reasonable fee for duplicate W2s. The FIRST one is free but you may be charged for duplicates.

If this is a second time they would've sent it I think so. Otherwise, you can go to your local IRS office and ask for a print-out of your 2005 income. It is free. It only has Federal Info though.
