I have used taxact for the last 3 years to prepare tax returns for myself and others in the family. It works fine for me, and I really like the interface and the way the program works.
The free version has a "nag screen" that asks you to buy the program if you're trying to use some of the functionalities that are only available in the paid program. For example tax advice and stuff like that. So basically if you need a lot of handholding and don't really know exactly what you're doing as far as tax laws, you probably want the paid one, which people don't realize, but it's also basically free because if you use the free program you still have to pay for them to submit your tax stuff electronically to IRS. If you use the paid one, your first tax submission is free, so it's pretty much the same thing either way, and you do get quite a bit more help in the paid one.
The one feature that I didn't see in taxact that i saw in taxcut, is a checker that goes over your tax return when you're done and asks you questions to make sure you're not missing any deductions. But if you know what you're doing, you should be fine.

Like others, I have used Tax Act for the last four or five years and have never had any problems.
It's free to prepare and file your federal return unless you buy an upgrade, and has no income restrictions to qualify for free filing.

I am not sure about the website but I know a lot of tax preparation websites will do your federal taxes for really cheap or free and then charge you a ton to do the State taxes. Try H & R block online. I did it and it was the cheapest one to do both of my taxes. Plus has free direct deposit!

I have used the taxact.com online version for the last two years and it has been very convenient. You can prepare and print the returns for free. However, the total cost to e-file my state and federal returns was $15.98 this year. They save your information from the previous years and import it into the current years tax return. This way you do not have to keep track of carryover investment losses, taxes paid last year, etc. which is very convenient.

Last year, it was free for military families. However, this was for online (internet) tax preparation. Most likely you'd have to pay if you took your forms in to an office.

Go to the IRS web site if your income is under a certain level you can do it there for free.
If not just buy Turbo Tax for $19.95 and do it yourself, in a very easy way ( and all the ppl in your house can do it 2 with the same program).
So if you have another 2 ppl in your house you split it and it's only $6.65 a piece.

I don't know about Taxact.. but if you want to file for free, go to www.irs.gov, and if you are eligible you can go through them to file taxes. They will send you to a 3rd party company, and I would think if it's the IRS sending you, it must be ok.

go to turbotax.com you can fill out all the information for your taxes on a secure site, that is accredited. you can also either choose to file electronically or just fill out everything online and actually print out your tax papers so you can mail them or you can just transfer it by hand onto your actual tax forms. it's pretty easy and it's completely free if you don't choose to submit it online.

I have used TaxAct for the past few years. They were completely safe and as advertised. My refund was in my bank account within five days.
