I'm not looking for what the books say, I'm looking for lots of answers from people so that I can get an idea of what other people have experienced. My daughter is 2 1/2 and sometimes won't take a nap. Other times, she naps for three hours! I know some kids stop before two and others nap well into 5 or 6 years old. How about yours? How old were they? Was it a sudden change (like one day just stopped napping)? Or was it more gradual? Did they switch to a quiet time? Start throwing fits or just stop sleeping? Thanks!

Naps for my oldest stopped when she entered Kindergarten--age 5. At age 7, she will take naps on the weekends.
Naps for my middle child (age 4) are hit and miss. He will take naps at Mothers Day Out, but that is only two days a week. Usually it is a huge fight to get him to nap at home. It is also IMPOSSIBLE to get him to lay quietly as he loves to talk and talk and talk.
Naps for my youngest (age 3) are a MUST. He loves to nap and has been known to fall asleep within seconds of laying down. He takes at least one nap a day....and STILL sleeps 10-12 hours a night.
My three kids fall all over the spectrum of napping. I hope this helps.

My Boys are almost two and they still nap for up to 2/3 hours in the afternoon after a good 11hours (up about 8am) sleep at night! They dont nap every day though, but if they dont they get very cranky and want bed early which is fine as they sleep right through, I think you should just work around your daughter if you can, take advantage of the quiet time when she is napping, have some alone time that doesnt involve housework and also enjoy her company when she decides she doesnt need a nap. like all other developmental stages all children are different, sorry cant be more clear, if it helps im 28 and i still like a nap :)

All 3 of my children were different. My first daughter napped anywhere from 30 min to 2 hours until she was almost 2. My second child was born 15 months after my first so she probably kept my first child up a lot with her fussyness, hence the cut short nap time. Then when my second child was 4 she stopped taking naps and my first child started napping again when she was 3-4. My son is 5 and he still takes naps. None of my kids necessarily took naps every day, nor did they take them for the same amount of time when they did. If they were feeling under the weather then they would sleep longer. If they were in a comfortable situation like a car seat in a moving car, they would sleep longer. It all depends and every child is different.

We haven't reached that point yet. My 3 1/2 year old still takes a 1-2 hour nap most days (maybe 4 days a month he doesn't take a nap). At the very least he has to lay down in bed for "quiet time" each day--I tell him that I'll come back in 20 minutes and if he's still awake he doesn't have to take a nap, he's virtually always asleep after the 20 minutes are up.

My two month old of course still gets about 4 naps a day.

I had my son stop taking naps at about 1 year old. If he took a nap he would not go to sleep that night. He's 8 now and still is the same way. He can't sleep during the day, if he does he's up all night!!! He's always been that way.

my 18 month old son is doing the same thing. he use to take a short nap mid-morning and then in the afternoon. it then went to just the afternoon for about 1 1/2 hours. now he hardly ever takes a nap and when he does he will sleep for three hours or just for one. it is never the same. i have a four year old also that never took naps. you could lay him down forever and he would just lay there awake. still at pre-school he lays and reads a book. i have tried the quiet time but it is hasn't worked. i usually let them watch a movie or tv show and then if they are going to take a nap that day they fall asleep. i try to do it at the same time everyday unless we are not at home. at first i thought this would get them in a routine of nap time everyday but so far it hasn't worked. i have noticed with both of them that if they don't take a nap they are very moody that night. my friends laugh and say that i am putting more work on myself trying to get them to nap then the time they are actually getting out of the nap but when it does work it is worth it. i hope this helped.

Sounds like your daughter is starting to ween herself out of naps. My daughter started when she was three...she just decided that she was missing out on some fun! So, I let her choose when she wanted to take a nap. Some days we had cranky monster time, but she evened out by the time she was 4. Now, she doesn't take naps at all unless she's been sick. (But who doesn't take naps when they are sick).

The other way that I measured it is that she goes to preschool where some of the kids take naps and some don't. Before she started the fall semester last year (at the age of 3 3/4) She said she didn't want to be taking naps any more. She has done really well with the transition.

My son was about 2 1/2 when he didn't take naps everyday. He started to take less naps, but when he did nap it was for 2 or 3 hours.By time he was 3 he stopped taking naps period, although once in a blue moon he'll take a 2 or 3 hour nap, but that's like 1 -2 times per every couple months.

My son who is now 5 stopped taking naps right after his 1st birthday, he would go to bed a little earlier because of it but refused to nap. My daughter is now 16 month's old and has recently quit taking naps as well.
