I'm almost 38 weeks pregnant and I'm wondering if most hospitals allow patients in maternity to use cell phones? I know at one time they were not allowed to be used in hospitals but maybe that has changed? Does anyone know? Thanks!

Obviously you're getting very conflicting answers. It varies from hospital to hospital. We went for the tour of the ward last week, and they actually encourage them in our hospital, but there are certain areas where you are not allowed to use them. (For example, in the hall near the operating room, where the signal could interfere with the equipment). A quick phone call will get you what you need to know. Or, see if your hospital has a website. Ours has a very informative section on everything to expect in the LDR department.

Each hospital is different, you may want to just call and ask the maternity ward at the hospital you're delivering @. Have you gone on your maternity ward tour, if not that would be a perfect time to ask about cell phones.

Hi Basil,
It competely depends upon the hspital, but I do beleive that most will allow calls in certain/ specific areas and the maternity ward is a typical area that is allowed.
The best thing to do would be to ask your doctor or call the hospital and inquire on their policy.
Take care!

It depends on the hospital as well as the area in the hospital. I would just call and ask. I know that in ICU and Baby ICU they are not allowed to be on. But most of the time in just a regular room it is okay, as well as in the rooms where you find regular pay phones. But I would for sure call ahead and just ask

At the hospital where I delivered the nurses used cell phones instead of the intercom system or beepers. You should be able to. I think since giving birth is such an exciting time and you want to call everyone they should allow it. Congrats!!!

not at all in my hospital- it interferes with fetal monitoring equipment. I would asssume every hospital is different, I would take the tour they offer for the maternity ward, they will explain all the rules etc.

I was in labor and delivery at my hospital last night and they told me they allow it but in maternity at my last hospital they wouldn't so I think it depends on the hospital. Just call and ask.

when i had my boys we had cell phones in there. my husband was on the phone with his mother through the entire birth of our son. i am in TX so maybe the laws or circumstances are different but i don't see why they wouldn't allow you to bring them in because there is no equipment that it can mess with as where there is in like an ICU or CCU or something like that. hope this helps, holly
