STEP ONE: Figure out what size and temperment you would like...lazy, hyper, a runner, hunter, etc
STEP TWO: Do you have an adequate yard or someone who is able to walk it and is someone available to take the pup out every 2 hours? Who is going to get up with the pup at night to toilet? Who is going to clean up after it?
STEP THREE: The cost! I have 2 dogs and they cost me a fortune in toys, food, vet bills, vaccines, supplies, kennels, dishes, pooper scoopers, new walls, furniture, carpet, pillows, shoes, obedience training, spaying/neuturing, etc.
STEP FOUR: Call your insurance company and discuss what kinds of breeds are not allowed in your city and under your insurance plan.
STEP FIVE: Do as much research as possible. For families who are busy, like large dogs, are very clean and have a lot of money to play with ...St. Bernards are amazing especially with children! For hyper dogs, who require a lot of playtime and attention, Boxers are great! Little dogs...pappillons, terriers, etc. Poor choices...Dachsunds and chihuauas tend to be tempermental. Pit Bulls, Dobermans, and Dalmations tend to throw around their attitudes...THEY are the boss so usually a poor choice for families with children.
Please consider all of this before purchasing a dog. They need to be welcomed and loved just as one of your children!!! Remember if your son pees on the floor, you do not take him to the pound!! Please do not take your pup to the pound either.

Depends on your life style. How many children do you have? Do you live in a house, apartment or condo? How much time are you at work? Do you travel frequently? These types of questions are vital in deciding what breed would be best for you. If you are home bodies...consider a dog that may be larger and require less excercise. If you're the outdoor type...try a lab or maby a retriever of some type. It is also important to remember to check your local shelter. There are so many deserving dogs that need good loving homes. Also, if you decide on a breed...look into a rescue organization that deals specifically with that breed.

Only research will help you... the good thing about breeds of dog is that you can get a good idea of how big they will get, thier general temperament, grooming requirements, excercise requirements, energy level, etc etc I suggest going through these sites and reading various dog breed profiles to get an idea of what type of dog would best suit your lifestyle and your family etc.

Good luck finding the breed that is right for you! Also you might want to consider adopting a dog from a shelter... in most cases you can get an adult dog that the shelter already knows everything about personality wise.

Well you have to take into consideration your lifestyle. Do you live in a house or in an apartment? Are you an active person or a couch potato? Things like that. Each breed has it's own unique characteristics. Research the breeds you are interested in, contact breeders, etc. Are you looking for a large, medium, or small dog? It's a tough call.

I bought a book "How to choose a purebred puppy". It talked about if the dogs were good for novice owners, amount of grooming required, amount of exercise needed, etc. I found it helpful. I got it from amazon.
Even if you don't want a pure bred dog from a breeder, you can kind of use it as a guide at a shelter. They will typically tell you what breeds a dog is mixed with.
I ended up with a Pug and am very happy with my choice.

Cesar Millan can help you but what I do to pick a pup is I pick the one who is most balanced. Will come to you but not be over excited & in your face.
There are a lot of good breeds . I own 2 min pins they are great like to play catch & tug of war& great with kids. Very little coat care & don't eat a lot. I feed mine Royal Canin 1/3cup 2 times a day. If you want a medium to large breed German pinschers are also a good breed so are bull dogs & Staffordshire bull terriers, Grey hound, great danes. good luck on your hunt. to look at all the breeds goto www.akc.org

Try looking on the internet. Type in how to choose the right dog for my family. It will pop up lots of suggestions. You want to really look at all the breeds, cause all of them are different. I have to Jack Russells and I wouldnt suggest them cause they are alot of work and need lots of attention and exercise. Good Luck. Try to adopt from a shelter to save a life. I got both of mine from shelters and you can bond with them just like a puppy. Also then you won't have to go through the potty training sometimes.

get a book on dog breeds, read until you think you have found the one that best fits your lifestyle and personality, also you might consider going to a shelter, or the pound even though most are mutts, they still make great pets.

Well it depends on what you want the dog for and what personality you want. Now people are getting golden retrievers. i wouldn't though, they do end up having alot of problems, duck tolling retrievers are smaller and smarter in my opinion. But I'd say mutts are by far the best.
