I am looking for a short 3-5 day stay. I understand mostly that it is an expensive place to visit because of the cost of living; however, I was wondering if it would be cheaper to fly into Baltimore and get a motel there or any other place. I am just from a low cost of living area and for me this would be an expensive trip. Any help would be great!!!

Baltimore is a nearly 45 minute drive from DC so if you stay there, you will have transportation costs to consider between the two cities.

I have used hotwire.com before to find cheap hotels. I would suggest staying as close to the mall as you can afford. That way you won't have to pay for the subway. I don't know your budget, but i have stayed at the Courtyard Embassy Row. It was close to a lot of attractions and only $99/night.

Try to Stay in NW. There are a lot of shady areas in DC. I have passed a lot of hotels where I would never consider staying.

If you want to stay outside of the city and take the metro in consider Old Town Alexandria or Arlington. There is ample public transportation to and from DC.

Will you be needing to rent a car or do you need a hotel with access to transportation? That is going to determine where the best place to stay is going to be.

If you decide to rent a car, fly into BWI and stay somewhere in good proximity to the subway. Bowie, College Park, and Greenbelt are all great areas with wonderful hotels at a much lower rate then downtown. They all each have shopping and dining as well.

The Bowie subway (New Carrolton about 5 miles from west) has free parking across the street from the Metro. The other parking lots are about $4. DC has a great subway system that will cost about $3.50 round trip from the suburbs into downtown. It is a lot less expensive then getting a Taxi.

If you don't rent a car, then you will probably need to stay downtown. Just make sure the hotel will have transportation from the airport, they are less money then taxi's. Also make sure the hotel is in walking distance from the subway. There are a lot of areas you need to stay away from in downtown if you decide to stay there, so make sure you research the hotel using yahoo or hotels.com.

Hoped this helped.

Fly into Dulles actually, not Baltimore. Stay in a hotel that's not downtown DC. and take the metro in. The best places to stay are in the Potomac Mills area. You're going to want to stay on the Virginia side of DC. The Maryland side is more expensive.

stay with a friend. ride the metro (subway) and busses.
tour the free places like the national mall, capital and monuments.
you can stay in baltimore but by the time you pay for the train it will be almost as much as DC. go online and try to find cheap hotel rooms. there are cheaper hotels there. consider looking for a hostel.

If you stay just outside of the city, your chances are better for saving on the accomodations, and most places like Arlington, VA, Alexandria, VA, even Silver Spring MD are literally 20 min drive or even 30 tops on our metro train system. Hit restaurants at happy hour for food and drink deals to save money, For any tours,Call the museums or monuments, etc., ahead of time to see if there are discounts on certain days/times. it is cheaper to fly most of the time in to BWI or Dulles, rather than Reagan, but that depends on where you are coming from at times as well.

If you are travelling alone you might consider a youth hostel. There are several in DC. See the link below for details.

try hostels. most of your time won't be in the motel anyway right?
