~This particular war is about power, stupidity, money and respect by Bush.
Usually, people don't go to war unless it's a last resort. Bush started this one, saying "You're either with us or against us." How many country's are with us?
We have no business being in this war! Let them handle their affairs, we need to focus on ours.~

Machiavelli felt that war was "diplomacy by other means".
It is about might makes right. War is about self interest, be it real estate, wealth, energy, food, water, etc. The human species is violent, acquisitive and suspicious. You get more than two people together you have the potential for war. This has been true since Cain and Abel and will remain true will the species is extinct.
Ask yourself, are you prepared to subsume your self interest for the benefit of someone else you don't know and have nothing in common with? If not, and they show up at your door demanding your possessions, what will you do?

War is a necessary evil resulting from the depravity of man. Some use war to acquire power in one way or another and if good people refuse to go to war to oppose him, he will only get what he seeks and cause further destruction.

In other words, it's not our job to start wars, it's our job to finish them (unless war is anticipated and a preemptive strike could draw the inevitable conflict to a quicker and more favorable conclusion).

Oh, and I disagree that the use of force does not breed respect. We would have a lot less trouble with terrorists if we inflicted terrible destruction for every American life lost. Good, healthy fear instilled in your enemies is the best way to avoid war.

But you can be sure that the kind of man who would start a war for his own is also not going to listen to reason and respond to diplomatic overtures.

War is a necessary evil of freedom and democracy. Without it, all the Saddam's, Ayatollahs, all the terrorists etc. would over run the planet forcing they're ugliness on the rest of us. It isn't a beautiful thing, but it is inevitable. To protect our way of life we must engage in war.

I think in a lot of cases it was the desire for power, land, resources..etc. But I think war has also been, in some minor instances, the result of fear of potential aggression.

What is war? - It's looking down the barrel of a rifle and seeing the enemy wearing a uniform for starters !!!

The usual reason for "war" is GREED and money by men !

"..using force for respect?"...?????? an oxymoron if ever I saw one
