yes,but try to find a good freestyle karate, you'll learn stand up,ground/grappling and weapons.zen do kai and bushi kai are the best of these but i don't think theres many in the states.don't listen to the karate knockers they obviously have no understanding of martial arts.there ruining a good forum with their stupid and uninformed comments.avoid the fads such as cappiero, bjj and krav maga.
A good well rounded style would be freestyle Karate. You will learn stand up,ground, grappling and weapons. What a lot of people don't understand is that freestyle Karate is about practical street defence not who can kick the highest or punch a pad the hardest. It's definitely not a sport martial art like TKD or BJJ.The motto of my style is the best of everything in progression.Basically that means we don't care where the technique comes from we improve it and integrate it into our style while still maintaining tradition as do most freestyle Karate's.
The hardest thing is finding a good experienced instructor.I would recommend Bushi Kai or Zen Do Kai, but if your not in Australia or New Zealand you may have some difficulty finding some one who teaches these styles. These styles also usually have separate classes available to everyone in Muay Thai and BJJ/Submission/Shoot wrestling. If you can't find one of these i would suggest Kempo or Enshin or another freestyle Karate.

It is IF the place you are learning from places sufficient emphasis on practical application of techniques rather than aesthetics or flash. I have seen far too many places were they are turning out black belts that have no idea how to actually USE the techniques they've learned. Also, you want avoid places that stress competitions and tournaments over other aspects of training as they often do not stress the practical side of things well enough.

Yeah, but you have to do the research to find out which discipline that will fit you best.

If you don't then you truly have wasted your time.

Martial Arts will help you with flexibility, self defense, a lot on a physical level, but it will help you on a mental level as well if you let it.

So it's really up to you and what you want to get out of studying Martial Arts in general.

good luck in finding a good place to train.

Yes, it is always good for a female to have some sort of defense. Being able to defend yourself will make your life alot easier. Oh, it also builds confidence and makes you understand the importance of fitness.

Karate is probably not an ideal form for a woman who is interested in self defense. Jiu jitsu is superior as well as a lesser known submission art known as aikido. these arts will teach you to inflict maximum discomfort with minimum strength. These are really good for everybody, but especially kids and the ladies.

Which karate? Some are, some aren't.

Shidokan, Seido, Kyokushin, and Eshin are good. As for the others I wouldn't trust.

That all depends on what your priorities are, why you want to learn it in the first place and how much time & effort you are willing to put into your study!
