I just read the list of foods that a person should avoid if he/she suffers from GERD. I just found out that 99.9% of food types is forbidden? I cannot eat chicken, fish, and baked potatato only for the rest of my life. It sounds like that everything is forbidden. From apple to eggs, to milk and even oatmeal. The list even includes salads. How can I live a healthy life if I cannot even eat healthy, nutritious food? Please I need some advise from those who actually have or had this problem. Thanks!

I'm 32 years old, height 5"6, and 120 lbs. Does changing my diet will cause me to lose weight (which I'm not planning to do). Or will it make my motabolism go slower and make me gain weight?

Forget food avoidance -- some studies have suggested that foods are not really the source of the problem and that lifestyle modification doesn't help very much (even though doctors continue to advise these). Losing weight helps, if you are overweight. But there are many effective medications, including Nexium, which is prescription, and several over-the-counter medications (ask your pharmacist).

By the way, I have GERD and have found that over time, I have had to change medications as one that used to work ceases to be effective. I've been taking Nexium for several years and right now, it's working. My gastroenterologist agreed that sometimes the medications that have been working quit working.

I knocked down my GERD with Orange Peel extract. Studies have shown it to be more effective that OTC or prescription meds.
It's called Quench the Fire, I had to order it online, cost $15, and I found it to be 95% effective.

" Heartburn & GERD—Orange Peel Extract* )
More than 60 million Americans experience heartburn at least once a month and more than 25 million suffer heartburn symptoms every day, according to a 1998 Gallup Organization national survey. Orange peel extract, made from fresh orange peels, works safely and effectively and without side effects. The great majority of people who have used orange peel extract report huge reductions in their heartburn pain. "
