I've just been scheduled for this procedure (where they use a scope to examine your esophagus and stomach) and I'm familiar with the basics.

I'm just looking for other peoples' experiences. If you could answer some of the following, I'd appreciate it:
How did you handle it?
Was it terribly uncomfortable?
How long did it take you to recover from the anesthetic?
Was it unpleasant to eat or drink afterward?
How soon after could you eat or drink?
(I ask this question because I have hypoglycemia and I don't want to be sick from that on top of being uncomfortable from the procedure)

Any candid advice and insights would be welcomed. Thanks for your time.

Also, they will be using "moderate sedation" for the procedure, so thanks for noting that. I won't be fully out, but I won't be able to drive myself home again.

Yes, it's not that bad at all. They put you out, with some very good drugs, then stick the thing down your throat. I woke up and felt absolutely fine, had a bit of a weird taste in my throat, but it was fine. You will definately need someone to drive you home the anesthetic doesn't wear off for a couple of hours. I remember asking for a six pack of the drug. HA HA My doctor thought that was really funny. You can eat and drink right afterwards. There's no down time with this, just gotta let the drugs wear off.

I actually had both endoscopies at the same time and neither one bothered me at all. Just enjoy the drugs!

I think the "moderate sedative" still knocked me completely out!

How did you handle it? Just fine. And I am a BIG BABY

Was it terribly uncomfortable? Not terribly uncomfortable at all.

How long did it take you to recover from the anesthetic? It always takes me a while cuz I easily pass out.

Was it unpleasant to eat or drink afterward? No discomfort afterward whatsoever.

How soon after could you eat or drink? I don't recall any restriction...

I just had them do the part where they numb your nose and throat... I did NOT get put to sleep... but I pass out easy and I did pass out. After I woke up, I still had them do the scope, which I didn't even feel. The only reason they had me get someone to drive me home was because I passed out. But remember, I pass out easily. I passed out the first time my earrings were changed, when my guinea pig bit me, etc. It is unlikely you will pass out.

Do not be afraid. it's not that bad and no need to be put to sleep.

I had it done a few months ago. I made the choice to be put out during the procedure. I had no aftereffects except a slight sore throat. I was able to eat and drink soon after. I was a bit groggy for an hour, but quickly picked up.

I suggest that you are made unconscious during the procedure and have someone there to drive you home after it is completed.

My girlfreind had it a few months ago. She is allergic to lots of drugs, so she elected to go through it with no anesthetic, no sedation, nothing.

Obviously, as a result, it was not a pleasant experience. She described it as having a garden hose stuffed down her throat.

All of which to say, be sure and get at least local anesthetic, and you will be a lot better off.

The procedure is simple and you will be out for it, the only thing I remember was them asking me to swallow, I gagged a little and they must have pumped more drug in cause I don't remember anything after that. After I was released my husband & I stopped at a Best Buy and then when to Quiznoz(spelling??) for lunch.

You'll be just fine.
