Because of original sin all mankind has been compromised and has the ability to misuse the free will that our loving Creator bestowed upon us all.
So if you admit that you believe in God, then logic dictates that you owe this God His dues - this then leads one down the religious road where a lot of people just don't want to go. THey see themselves as mini-gods - not accountable to anyone but to whom they personal decide that they will be accountable too.
Keep in mind just because a person, or a city full people "profess a certain belief" doesn't in itself make it true. During the 1930's in Germany a lot of people professed a belief in a mad man named Hitler - they let go of reason and put blind faith in a man who was mad. A lot of good German's went along with the program for their own reasons - but this does not alter the fact that we shouldn't always "respect" others beliefs - especially if they are harmful beliefs.

Well, for one... there are SO MANY different gods out there thought up by humankind. Which is the TRUE god? Why must there be a true god AT ALL if there's no evidence that the universe was created by a higher being? Thor, Zeus, etc... all the gods from the past are now in mythology books. Same will happen with all the modern gods - Allah, (Christian) God, etc.
It started with polytheism... now it's monotheism... eventually it will be NO gods will be believed in because we're getting out of our primitive world and into one of education and science.

In answer to your question: because it just don't make sense!
My question to you: Why do so many people in this modern world still WANT to believe in any god? Remember when you found out about Santa Claus? You should really question the stuff that your parents (and theirs) made you beleive.

It's based upon the same lie that Satan told Eve in the Garden of Eden - "You will be as gods." Satan has tricked the whole world into believing that they are little "gods", in charge of their own destinies; the culmination of "evolution"; "We are the only ones who can save our planet"; believing they have the right to take human life as they see fit; religions like buddhism and New Age telling people to "look for the god inside you", etc.
The problem is that people don't want to believe in a God who will judge His own Creation someday. They want to be free to sin as they please without fear of retribution.

Because they are called demons. demons are very crucial to God and his people. You can talk about God all you want, why would a God save you from what? Even if you believed about God, does that mean you really care? Who would ever care about you men.

Dude, read the bible...I mean REALLY read the bible. Do you really want to believe in something like that? god is a mass murderer, jesus taught the people how to properly care for slaves...you worship this? Most people dont have a clue what it is they think they are having faith in, and when faced with the facts straight out of their own book of worship find ways to dismiss it. Dont be a fool. Say NO to religion.

I believe in God, but most people who don't do not believe in God because he is on a par with having their path crossed by a black cat, avoiding the number 13, throwing salt over their shoulder, etc. They view it as a superstition.

Why does the world of modern man not want to believe in a Russell's teapot that created this world and us?
we can talk all we want about Russell's teapot and our beliefs but until we see why people don't want to believe we can never understand how to live with one another in a world that requires people to live together with different beliefs. So this is just for me and my understanding of others who want their beliefs to be heard too.
---
Russell's teapot, sometimes called the Celestial Teapot, was an analogy first coined by the philosopher Bertrand Russell, intended to refute the idea that the burden of proof lies upon the sceptic to disprove unfalsifiable claims of religions. In an article entitled "Is There a God?," commissioned (but never published) by Illustrated magazine in 1952, Russell said the following:
If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is too small to be revealed even by our most powerful telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my assertion cannot be disproved, it is intolerable presumption on the part of human reason to doubt it, I should rightly be thought to be talking nonsense. If, however, the existence of such a teapot were affirmed in ancient books, taught as the sacred truth every Sunday, and instilled into the minds of children at school, hesitation to believe in its existence would become a mark of eccentricity and entitle the doubter to the attentions of the psychiatrist in an enlightened age or of the Inquisitor in an earlier time.
In his book A Devil's Chaplain, Richard Dawkins developed the teapot theme a little further:
The reason organized religion merits outright hostility is that, unlike belief in Russell's teapot, religion is powerful, influential, tax-exempt and systematically passed on to children too young to defend themselves. Children are not compelled to spend their formative years memorizing loony books about teapots. Government-subsidized schools don't exclude children whose parents prefer the wrong shape of teapot. Teapot-believers don't stone teapot-unbelievers, teapot-apostates, teapot-heretics and teapot-blasphemers to death. Mothers don't warn their sons off marrying teapot-shiksas whose parents believe in three teapots rather than one. People who put the milk in first don't kneecap those who put the tea in first.

honey, it's not people don't WANT to believe.
They look at the available facts and think 'this christian god seems a tad unlikely and his bible appears to be written by primitive men'.
Somehow from the wording of your question I suspect your were talking about the christian god despite you not saying so.
