Dean Hamer, an evolutionary biologist, wrote an interesting book entitled, "The God Gene: how faith is hardwired into our genes", in which he suggests that the tendency to believe in a supreme being is an inheritable trait. Some have it, some do not.

Although I do not agree with much of his writing, and think some of his claims are rather careless, it is an interesting idea. And if it is true, then perhaps you tendency to "not believe" is a genetic trait rather than a mere choice.

You can choose to believe in anything... it's a choice.

You could decide you've seen a ghost and look for belief systems that support that belief. You could believe you've seen a UFO and become a scientologist. I saw a UFO once... I choose to believe it was someone fooling around in a small plane... couple a beers and a "hey, everybody, watch this..."

Edit: Are you saying that I can never change my mind? That we are "predestined" to be atheist? I don't buy that any more than I'd buy a godly predetermination.

Another edit: If your looking to compare atheism to sexuality, you'd be comparing apples to oranges. But... good question, you got me going on this one...

Yes, you can choose to believe in that which cannot be proven.
There really are all sorts of odd choices that we make in life.

I would say yes you are. You are expecting that God prove himself to you, which will never happen, because you're not looking where you should be, which is within.

It's all about faith. Just like the movie "The Polar Express"--Believe. You will never hear the bell if you don't believe.

Signs are all around. You're just choosing to ignore them looking for bigger ones.

Everyone is born an agnostic atheist. It's all a matter of whether you're persuaded enough into theism or not.

It is not possible, belief is never a choice. You cannot believe what to you makes no sense, nor can you choose not to believe what makes sense to you.

No, you are not. Even if you had free will, which you don't, it would not be your choice. You cannot choose which evidence you find compelling.

if you don't believe, you don't believe. it would be terrible for you to pretend to believe anything other than what is in your heart. search for an athiest support group in your area, they know what you are feeling and can help you.
