Adopt from a shelter or pound. It will already be fixed and have it's shots, which will probably save you more than you even pay for a shelter pup.
Just be sure that you're in a place where you can provide a lifetime home... dogs live up 15 or 20 years. It's extremely hard on dogs when they are given up by their family. Especially if you're getting a pup (but with any dog really), be prepared to do obedience classes with it. It helps the dog, but more importanty, it helps us learn how to train them. A trained dog is a great dog. An untrained one, no matter what the breed, is a pain.
Good luck!

Go to your local animal shelter, or maybe you can find one through the newspaper or craigslist. There are a lot of animal rescue agencies as well, several that "foster" the dogs in people's homes. (In that type of situation, you could also find out more about the dog's personality.) Some agencies have websites with photos and info about the dogs, along with the price to adopt. Costs vary, and depend on your location, but enjoy your search! Puppies are a lot of fun! (:

Usually a rescue is the most cost effective way. Your local shelter may have an initially lower adoption fee, however, most rescues usually make sure their dogs are fully vetted and completely healthy. In addition, a rescue will usually try to match you up with a dog that meets your needs preventing you from a costly mistake.

Stay out of the pet stores. You don't want an animal born from a psychologically tortured dog who spends her life in a 5 by 5 cage, nor would you want to support such practice.
Its always best to do business with a trusted, private breeder, or check the local pounds / animal shelters.

Is this you or your wife's first experience with getting a puppy? If so consider pursuing possibly a slightly older dog that is already house broken. It has to be very consistent with training, when trying to house break the puppy. Plus puppies need lots of love & attention. They have a very short attention span. They shouldn't be punished to severely if they have an accident. Plus they don't have a lot of control overf their bowels, like a baby...they can't hold stuff in very long before they need to be taken outside to relieve themselves...Just consider my advice, O.K.?

I saw some of the other answers but if you whant to know what it could turn out like go to a breeder. You dont know what might turn up later in temperment, health which could cost you more in the end if you get a rescue dog .

Contact the local animal shelter. Odds are you can find a great dog already neutered for a very reasonable donation and save a life as well.

Go to the local pound and pick one up for free.
And by the way, do the world a favor - the last thing
we want to be doing is killing unwanted dogs one
place and breeding them elsewhere.

If she doesn't care about it being a purebred, get one from an animal shelter. They have some wonderful pups/dogs looking for good homes. They charge a minimal fee to cover their care, shots, and spay/neuter.

A reputable shelter.
DO NOT BUY A DOG FROM A PET STORE OR A BREEDER.
There is no reason to breed or buy while homeless animals die.
