Another question on dog food. I am looking for a good food for my st bernard and border collie. I also would like to be able to find a cat food of the same brand...so I can buy them at the same stores! I really don't want food with corn in it because animals, of all shapes and sizes don't digest food, and because of the dangers of molds/toxins in corn (aflatoxins, etc) it's just not worth the risk. Also, I really don't want glutens, as they are highly allergenic, and our border collie has enough skin problems as it is. So my question is, is it really that big of a deal if there is corn in the food or not, or am I just making something out of nothing? Also give you me your takes on dog/cat foods, what you use, and what is affordable? I bought a bag of merricks when we first got our st bernard, it was all we could get her to eat...but it is $50 for 30 pounds...OUTRAGEOUS...buy my dog seems to be a health nut!

You are correct in not wanting to feed them food containing corn and glutens. Although Merrick is a little more expensive, you end up feeding less than you would on a regular petstore food variety(science diet, purina, pedigree, eukanuba, iams). I have my dobie on Wellness dog food; and they have cat products as well. They have several different varieties, none of them containing wheat glutens or corn. My dobie goes through a 26lb bag in 4 weeks, and she is high energy, otherwise the bag would probably last twice as long. The recommended feeding for a dog her size is 2.5 cups a day, but she gets around 5(this is the only thing I have found she isn't allergic to, so I don't mind getting it and feeding her more). Can you imagine how much science diet or iams she would be eating every day? Probably close to 8 cups, which means more poop. I'd stick with the higher quality foods, you'll notice a difference in your dogs' coats and teeth. And I bet the border collie would have less skin problems (I'd check out the Wellness Simple Solutions line, which is what my allergic doberman is on).

Chicken Soup for the (Puppy/Dog/Cat/Kitten) Lover's Soul. My dog has skin allergies and this keeps his skin from breaking out. Plus, it's all natural with no corn. My dog is extremely finnicky and this is all he will eat, I swear by it. We buy it at a local feed store, and if you just read the ingredients you'll see how great it is. It costs me about $34 for a 35 lb bag. The only problem is that on all his old foods a 35 lb bag would usually last a month but he loves this stuff so much it only lasts 2-3 weeks! I'm also putting the link for a site that rates dog foods so you can see some other good foods, although it doesn't include a lot of good ones like Chicken Soup, Merrick's, and etc.

I would suggest Natural Balance, they have both dog and cat formulas with excellent ingredients, reasonable prices and yes NO CORN!. Also they have the best allergy formuals out there and the most variety of alternative protiens, suck as duck, venison, fish that can really help with skin problems.. really you are not exaggerating the uselessness of corn in dog food, it is also one of the things that causes food allergy.

This is what Natural Balance has to say..

some of these people are CRAZY! number one....if you feed your dog olroy...kibbles...or beneful..its like feeding them twinkies all day....its nothing but fat and fillers. Natural choice is a good brand. my personal favorite is Science Diet. They have so many different types you can get regular in normal bites or small bites, you can get puppy, lamb and rice for skin allergies and coat problems and they also sell many assortments of cat food. not mention that it is full of protien and little fat. ITS VERY good for them. also Iams is good however I have heard that Iams doesn animal testing so if you are against that I wouldnt go for them, and eukanuba I have heard does the same, but I havent taken the time to research it. You want to make sure that when you look for a dog food that you read the ingredients, if the first ingedient is corn thats BAD thats just a filler and id horrible for the dogs, you want the first ingedient to be a meat, chicken, beef, and lamb are most used in dog foods now. also look on the bag to see the % of fat, protien etc. You want the protien to have as much as they possibly can. I hope that helps some. I feed my dog ONLY science diet because I have done extensive research on it. Also if you have a dog with food allergies there is a brand of dog food you can get from your vet called I/D sometimes dogs can be allergic to chicken, been and lamb so that brand of food has different types of meat like Deer, or all veggies, rabbit etc. Just please if you care about your animals as much as I think you do, DO NOT FEED THEM OLROY, KIBBLE, or BENEFUL. PLEASE :0)

Don't feed your dog food that contains corn, byproducts or preservatives.

Corn is a filler and is indigestible....it leads to large, runny stools.

Many dog food contain large amounts of byproducts (i.e. animal remnants) or chemicals to preserve it....they are them sprayed with animal fat to make it somewhat enticing for the poor pet who has to eat it.

Petsmart has a brand of dog food called Harvest that is baked, with no corn, byproducts, preservatives, or added fat. It's highly digestible so you can feed your dog about half as much as the Purina, Eukanuba, Iams, and other garbage dog foods. Your dog will have smaller, firmer stools for easier clean up.

royal canin is an excellent dog food and it has breed specific foods and i and my mother feed our dogs these foods and the vet is always amazed at their blood work . My mother has a 14 yr old husky and she jumps around like a puppy and i am convinced it is because of the food. good luck.
