Yes. When you pray to GOD (if you intend to do so), nothing is supposed to be in front of you since you can't see God (physically). That is, nothing should be between you and God while you're praying to Him.

It is only an idol, if you worship the cross. But, praying to the cross, that is only a remembrance of what Jesus did for you and me. The cross is a symbol for our Faith. Jesus is someone who is worthy of your praise. So, I would turn all praise to Him. Remember, the cross is only wood, would someone really want to worship something that is not living? I know for me I worship only one person, no man, no non living thing, but the the one who is worthy of all praise. I hope you come into that realization as well, may you follow the one who is wanting to be in a relationship with you. Blessings.

Fine line of interpreting a persons prayers.

I tend to believe some pray to what the cross represents.

Just as you have pictures of Christ hanging in your home or pictures of your kids in your wallet, so does the Church put pictures (statues) of Christ, Mary, Joseph and other saints in the Church. They are just plaster, marble or wood and that's all they are, but they have a specific purpose. They are there to help us to visualize who they may have been and what they have done for Christianity or the Catholic Church in some special way. When we pray at the foot of the crucified Lord we do worship that Christ on the Cross, but that Christ who died for us by walking through His passion, death and resurrection. The image on the wall or in the alcove helps us call to mind their holiness and our need for it.

God Bless You

Idol: a representation or symbol of an object of worship. That's the definition.

I think the idea is to pray to what the cross represents not the cross itself.

In theory, people do not pray to the cross, but to what the cross represents (i.e., Jesus Christ). The object simply allows them to focus their thoughts. So no, it is not idol worship.

Depends on if y ou are actually praying TO the cross, or using the cross to keep focused on prayer.

yes, the cross was used as a death instrument much like the gas chamber today. Also remember that Jesus is not on the cross anymore!!

Only if you think the cross can do something for you. If you think it's "Hethra the All-Powerful Cross of Aragon."

But that's not what you mean, is it. You're just trying to insult Christians. Got nothing better to do with your time?

Yes if you were praying to the cross.

If you are praying to the One who is represented by the cross there would be no idolatry.

If so the ark of the covenant would have been of no value to the hebrews.
