The next rank up is Staff Sergeant. You get promoted by being recommended to go to the E-6 board. If you pass the board, you have to have enough points to make it as well. Points are figured by education, army schools, pt test, and awards plus the board score. YOu then have to go to and pass BNCOC which is the basic non commisioned officer's course. Then you are officially an E-6 or staff sergeant.

The next rank is a Staff Sgt. (E-6) and he has to go before the promotion Boards for it, assuming that he has enough time in grade and has enough promotion points!
