I mean, Paul was smart enough to escape getting beaten up or stoned or otherwise avoid an unruly mob.

Does the description of Stephen -- "his face shown like that of an angel" -- give us a clue? I think of an person -- someone who is a bit slow.

You are trying to place human interpretation upon God's truth. His word is what it is. Do not add to or take away from it lest you get the wrath of God upon you.

Revelation 22:18-19 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

Stephen was faithful to God and that is where his angelic appearance came from. He was not slightly retarded. His power came from God.

Acts 6:8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
