3 guys walk in a hotel to get a room. clerk says "that's $150." so each guy divies up $50. for their share of the room. later the hotel manager checks out the registry and sees that the clerk over-charged the 3 guys by $50. and tells the clerk to refund the guys the $50. so the clerk takes 5 ten's out of the register and goes to their room. on the way up the elevator he thinks; "how the hell am i gonna split $50. evenly between the 3 guys?" he decides that he'll give each guy back $10. and pocket $20. which adds up to the $50. he took from the till.
now the question to the riddle is this: if each guy got back $10. from the original $50. they each paid, that means the 3 guys paid a total of $120. for the room. $40.x3=$120. right? so if that's true, and the clerk pocketed $20. what happened to the other $10.?

Here goes nothing...
The trick lies in the fact that the $20 that the clerk pockets is actually part of the money that the guys paid. The guys did actually pay $120 to the hotel, $20 of which the clerk kept. Therefore the $30 that was returned to the guys is actually the amount that should be subtracted from the $150 that they paid originally. So it actually goes something like this...
$150 original payment
-$50 refund ($20 to the clerk, and $30 to the 3 guys)
=$100
- OR -
$150 original payment
/3 for each of the guys
=$50
-$10 refund
=$40 paid by each guy
*3=$120 paid by the guys ($100 to the hotel, and $20 to the clerk)

Easy. The three guys paid $150 total when they got there. The manager says to the employee guy "Go give this $50 back." So the employee only actually gives $30 and pockets $20. It's still $150, you've just manipulated the numbers in a way that SEEMS paradoxical

It can't be solved, because it's an mathematical error to equate it to them each having paid $40, after removing the $20 the clerk took from the equation.

3(150/3) is not equal to 3((150-50+20)/3) + 20

nothing it s still in the cleck's pocket. the guys each paid $50. the room was all together $100. so: $33.3*3=$100. he had to pay them back 50 dollars total, he stole 20, and gave 10 to each (10+10+10+20=50). I think that was right.

they paid 150 then 50 was returned so they only paid 100. the guy kept 20 and gave back 10 to each one of the guys. No trick just depends on how you see it. can i get 10 points.

There is no extra $10.
The original amount is $150.
The hotel has $100.
Each man has $10. ($10x3=$30)
The clerk has $20.
$100+$30+$20=$150
It's all in how you look at it :-)

No one has solved it because it is worded wrong. The question is asked incorrectly.
The correct answer has been posted though.
