i get this strange shooting pain in my head on only one side and sometimes right above my ear. It comes and goes and is not unbareable or anything just strange. I went to my doctor and she said it was my jaw - does that even make any sense?

Yes, it could make sense, if your jaw does not fit entirely properly.

The first thing I want to ask you are you stressed out, how is your blood pressure, because those might be the problem. There 3 types of headaches and this is a special one and i would suggest you see a doctor immediately or if you need to go to the ER go to a hospital with a good reputation and not a fairly newer hospital with a bad reputation that no one really knows about. The reason Im saying this is because my mom had the same kind of headaches and we took to this newer hospital thinking we would get good medical service and they ended up almost killing my mother with morphin (pain medication) overdose after we told the nurses that her dose was a little big. Well I hope I helped you and I hope you feel better.

If you have a massage therapist friend have them work on your back, shoulders, and the front and back of the neck. Even though the pain is around your jaw and ear the other muscles (harder for you to get to) also refer pain to those areas. You lightly scratch or rub everywhere on your head (including seeing if there are knots in the muscles between your fingers while one is in your mouth) - What you are looking for are sore spots (trigger points).
Rub them a few times several times a day to try to get them to loosen up.

You could have a faulty bite. I saw and orthodontist for this and he sanded down my back teeth, which helped a lot. Chewing on hard candy and food may aggravate the problem. I get those type of headaches and I massage, (fingertips) using a circular motion, the side of the head and neck along with my forehead, scalp, etc. which helps a lot.
