I have had both hips replaced. I also had an allergic reaction to amoxicillin and was told never to take it again. Since I've been asked to premedicate before dental cleanings, etc., the surgeon prescribes clindamycin instead of amoxicillin. Clindamycin isn't the only possibility. BUT, tell the surgeon that will be doing your March surgery about your allergic reaction. I always worry that this information will slip through the cracks.

RE:
What can I take if I'm allergic to amoxicillin?
I've never had a reaction to any antibiotics prior to this weekend after being on amoxicillin on and off for three months. I first got hives and then had difficulty breathing. Went to ER and they treated me. I have a surgery scheduled on 3/7 and need to take antibiotics (I had a hip replacement...

Those pictures look like an allergic re-action . Usually a doctor does prescribe 500mg, sometimes more depending on the infection. I myself am allergic to many antibiotics. It may take two days for it to work out of your system. If the symptoms worsen call the physician. I would also ask your doctor about another type of antibiotic if amoxicillin is causing this type of rash.

for pain.........hydorcodon will help you out.
But, if your allergic to amoxicillin and that's what you are asking aoubt then absolutely not. A mild reaction can turn into a deadly reaction you've already reacted to it before. Usually, a mild reaction occurs before a large one occurs............

definitely an allergic reaction. antibiotics usually come in high doses b/c it's needed to fight off infection. and it does take time for all of the medication to leave your system. i can't believe your doctor wants to put you back on a medication he "thinks" you are allergic to!! he should know that the more you come in contact to something you are allergic to-the worse the reaction gets!! do NOT allow him to put you back on this medication-you have a patient's rights law that allows you to have a say in your medical treatment and i would advise you being switched to another antibiotic-now the important thing to remember with antibiotics is they usually come in groups and there are several "sister" drugs for amoxicllin-anything ending with "-cillin" is more than likely a sister drug and you'll react to it as well. augmentin is another drug that actually has amoxicillin in it-so avoid this one as well. you will probably be safe with things such as erythromycin, gentamycin, vancomycin,or keflex. check with your doctor and make sure whatever medication he does put you on doesn't have any form of the "cillin" you are allergic to. and if your doctor doesn't seem to be sympathetic to your allergy or still insists on retrying the medication-switch doctors-your health is too important to be tested like that.
