red wine or merlot?

I'm going to assume you are referring to a generic "red table wine" when you say red wine. In that case, it depends on the wines. Typically, merlot and table wine are not what you would go for for sweet red wine. Normally, you would shoot for a cabernet sauvignon or pinot noir. But between the two, I would go for the washington state merlot being sweeter than any generic red table wine I've ever seen.

One of the sweetest wines you will find will be considered Port wines. They are a great drink to have with desserts and just as an after dinner treat. Rheislings from Germany are rather sweet white wines. For the person who said that merlots are sweet, I have to differ. Merlots are oaky with a bit of berry after taste but for the most part are dry.

Merlot is one of the many varietals of "red wine." As "dinner-wines" go, merlot is one of the lightest and would be considered "sweet" by some. I know Cellar No.8 has a merlot that has a very sweet aroma. Pinot noir can also be sweet in its lightness.

If you want something that is sugar-sweet, I would look for a dessert wine such as a good port.

Well, merlot is a type of red wine...if you're referring to cabernet sauvignon, then merlot is a little sweeter... it generally has a higher sugar content. Although of course this may vary based on the vineyard.

Merlot is a variety of red wine, and is not sweet.

if you want a semi sweet red, go for grenache varietals.

if you want a sweet wine, period, you'll need to go with a white like riesling.
